Aluminium Cases
« on: June 14, 2011, 09:59:53 am »
Hi,

I need two aluminium cases for some chipamps I have, about 180 mm high. I will likely need another case for the pre-amp Rudi is putting together (F5 valve preamp) as well as a case for another amp I am busy with. So I need a few cases. I have scoured this forum, and while a number of resources are mentioned, it seems that there are a number of people that constantly need cases. Those cases Gert sold a while ago (cannot find post) would have been brilliant, and I see they were very popular.

Perhaps we should work together and design 2 or 3 different standard cases (60, 120, 200 mm tall) of standard dimensions (420 x 300 mm) to be available in a kit format. One get the different plates as a kit that you have to put together yourself with a plain faceplate. We should identify a place/some-one where we can source the materials and a place/some-one that can cut the different plates for the kit.

The kit should consist of:
- Bottom plate of Stainless steel with slots for air ventilation cut
- Top plate with slots
- Plain back plate (different heights - The heights should correspond with standard available heatsinks so one can use it for an amplifier) (Alu)
- Fitting side plates
- Nice thick front plate (Alu)
- Bus bars

While I do not have an issue drilling the mounting holes, it would be great if one can get that pre-drilled.

With the front and back plate being plain Aluminium it would relatively easy to work, or one can take it to a machine shop to cut, drill etc too each persons liking.

Trying to get one only case is bitterly expensive, so is the cutting of the ventilation slots for only two plates. If we can do 20 plates the costs is far more acceptable.

Any input or ideas ?

Regards

Morne

Brilliant idea, if we can keep a constant flow of 10 or so cases. But, this might prove difficult.
But, I'm all for it!!

I'll get a quote on a "generic" case kit. I have also gotten quite a few requests on this kind of product.

I would be in for at least 4, perhaps 6. Based on Gert's post a few years back, those cases went fast, and I am sure that we can get enough people together here to take at least 20 cases. It will reduce the cost significantly if we can order together.

Sounds like a good idea. I have a few LM3886 chips that I haven't used because I couldn't get/build a decent looking case :(.

Morne lets have a chat first. I have some ideas around a case and will be the easiest construction out.
it is based on the NAIM boxes. what is nice about them, you don't see any screws. basicly two pieces that slides into each other.

Nice. Any design is fine by me, as long as the cases looks great and the manufacturing process does not raise the price too much.

That could work nicely!

I have an old Electrocompaniet case design in mind. 3 parts in sheet metal. Face, top cover and bottom plate (which acts as rear panel as well).

Perhaps if we can have  a photo or idea how it might look, we can select one design. I would prefer using aluminum due to the ease that one can work with it.

Those boxes Gert sold a while back would be perfect, we make one small and one large case. Rudi, I remember that you used yours to build in an amp and that valve preamp. And those boxes seemed easy to assemble from the parts.

The prices to manufacture will be significantly more I would imagine

I've been looking online for a source of more of these boxes online without luck. That really is your best bet. Failing that, there are EBay options (if you put a little effort in) that you can consider. In fact, I'm planning on bringing in a random bunch just to play around with. Shipping will most likely be silly though.

I have one of the larger of the cases Gert was selling that I am prepared to part with for a smaller design. Preferably something I can build a phono-stage into or similar.
