Don't know retail, but Take2 has them for about R3500. Also the new Q701 at that price.

Do you rate them as good?

Saw some on special through a window but too far to see the price. Will check it out. Seems regular price is Euro199.00 or so on Amazon.

Its preferred to use the AKG K701 with decent amplification if you are to get the best out of them, but I think the price for them is reasonable. Amazon often has them on special so at times you should be able to get them even for less at times. The K701s appear to be rated highly here, I've only heard the AKG K272 which I quite liked, but was lacking a bit in bass, but that was also straight out of ipod. Don't know if this also holds true for the K701?

In that price class you could also consider the Sennheiser HD650/HD600 (also requires dedicated amplification) or the Grado SR325is which will work fine straight out of an ipod.

I have a can amp, I own Cardas wired HD600 already. Also Ultrasone Ican, Soundmagic PL30s. Just thought if cheap I may not resist a bargain but pointless if they are poor or basic.

Price locally for K701/702 would be around R 7000. Take 2 price from UK is about the same, althoug USA has them at a discount. Ebay  also offers them at discount but some may be refurbished/or not covered by AKG warrentee

I can't remember the exact details when I tested them at the time (we tried about 5 cans), but I remember I quite liked the 701's when I compared them against my 555's on an Aurelia. It was def in a better league but I didn't feel they were worth the local asking price. When compared to international pricing, it's a much better deal and def worth it.

I brought in a pair of 702's from take 2 , they were faulty in that deep bass at high volume distorted , had a lot of hassle getting a refund , they were on special at R3400 , nearly bought another set of sen 650's at the Hai yin market in guangzhou (about 3000 shops selling from the highest high end stuff to real ipad2 and fakes and every other electronic gadget/phone/camera inbetween , amazing place. I will post some pics in another thread.) The brand new non fake 650's were R2450 and I haggled down to R1800 .. decided at the end not to buy cos of size of packaging and I already have a pair.

Kind of where I was except I don't have a pair but have decent cans. Did buy some Ultrasone Icans and liked their presentation so far.

I am no longer in Munich where these were on "special" at an "I Store" of sorts.
I feel some regret for not trying as I could have probably moved them on at no loss if they were not better. It is however not as if the others I have are rubbish.
