Live Jazz/Performances in and around Jozi
« on: May 19, 2011, 05:47:30 pm »
HI,

So as music lovers and audiophiles - one always needs to reference their system on live music - say at a concert/ jazz fest (etc).
Apart from the occasional artists, that visit SA - some of which turn out with bad sound... are there any jazz clubs that you guys attend, that are actually descent - in terms of set up and how they actually sound?
Anything between JHB/PTA?

I have seen a few at Newtown, but they don't seem to be regular or consistent.

If it's a little further - then the drive there, must be worth while....  :)

There are a few decent clubs that offer decent sound and acts in and around the Jozie area

http://tanzcafe.co.za/

http://theradium.co.za/giglineup.html

http://www.bluesroom.co.za/

http://www.thebo.co.za/

These are just some of the ones i have been to with my old mans band who has and still does play at these venues except the Bo - little more underground but awesome nontheless

Hi,

Thanks for response and links.
I've been to Blue's Room before - the band that was playing at the time had descent tunes - but the sound????  :( ???

I hope this was just a once off.

Whats the name of your Old mans band?
It'll be great to check them out...

My old man George plays in a band called the Moloi Hesse Band - pretty cool blues band if i say so myself - they play sort of old school Robert Johnson style blues

The band use some of the top musos in SA

Jacqui Moloi - Vocals
George Hesse - Bass
Ivo Back - Drums
Wayne Coughlin - Guitars
Ruben Samuels - Drums
Alistair Coakley - Guitars
Brian Smith - Brass

to name a few...

One site that I've found especially useful is this one: http://jazzinjozi.blogspot.com

Been to a lot of terrific performances that I learned of from that site.

I was very saddened by the death of local (and one of my all-time favourite) jazz artist, Zim Ngqawana, who died last week on monday. He was supposed to perform this past saturday at Wits. His shows were always awesome.

hehehe - hope the sound is good, just now i see a post that it was crap - and go there with a sore heart....  :(
 - hope that doesn't happen....
 - worst of all only the expensive seats were available - so the bang/buck ratio better be good.

at least i know what to expect on the music side of things....  :)

Enjoy bud...  ;)
