Board Pricing
« on: October 17, 2007, 10:54:11 am »
For those looking for boards, I think that it would be kewl to post in this thread if you find any suppliers cheaper than those listed. I will try to keep the list updated at the top of this thread. Dont know for how long that is possible?

Lets Try To Keep the format standard. Any other columns that need adding?

Area    Supplier Name    Supplier Phone    Supplier Website    Product    Price Exc Vat    Date    Notes
Cape Town    Davidson's Discount Boards    021 704-7060    www.davidsonsboards.co.za    22mm MDF (6x9)    655    2007-10-17    CNC Cutting Service R18 p/min
Cape Town    Davidson's Discount Boards (Strand)    021 853-4200    www.davidsonsboards.co.za    22mm MDF (6x9)    542    2007-10-17    This is the lighter colour import board, but it still has a density of +- 700Kg /m3 - so same as supawood
Gauteng    HS Timbers    011 422-3223    www.hstimbers.co.za    16mm MDF (Supawood) (6x9)    392.50    2007-10-17    R5 Per Cut, Super Acurate (Within 0.5mm) as per Gbyleveldt

Not a price, but...

Davidsons also do CNC cutting...

Thanks for the info. Great idea.

It just occurred to me: There are different types of MDF. I'm used to the brown-coloured ones, but the boards Davidsons cut for me were very light in colour and almost paper-like in quality. They also seemed a bit lighter than brown MDF (but this might simply be because they had already been cut). Do check it out before you buy. I would like to hear another opinion. They also have other branches; I'm not sure if the others (beside Ottery) do CNC.

H&S Timbers.

http://www.hstimbers.co.za/specials.htm

Their boards are the darker type and is the proper SupaWood. They charge you R5 a cut of any length and I've found it to be super accurate (within 0.5mm over a few cuts)

Guys, an MDF sheet is usually 6x9. I buy mine at Citiwood in Silverton and they usually cut up fairly accurately. Submit parts list and they'll deliver cut up (they do the cut-list) Dunno about price currently.

For those in the Northern suburbs of Johannesburg, Timber City in Blairgowrie (cor Jan Smuts & Gordon) also provide a "cut to requirements" service and also carry Supawood in various thicknesses.  They DO NOT offer any CNC facilities.

I've used them for ~10 years and have found their "cutting to spec" to be pretty good.

PS: They also occasionally have "specials" on "exotic woods" - its worth keeping an eye on them from time to time.

The price I got from Timbercity here was ~R820, and Citiwood was ~R860. Both Excl Cutting / Delivery / VAT

That's a major variance! I wonder how this is justified? Perhaps some of these boards are imported? In fact, I distinctly remember seeing "Argentina" printed on the edge of some boards getting transported.

That quite simply means that the price for MDF has risen massivly. Why don't we get reasonable ply in this country? If they import MDF surely they can get cheap russion birch or the like that is so popular worldwide, or is there simply no market for these things?

I always thought that marine ply (available) was void-free (?). Anyone have some knowledge on this?

Yes you are right, it should  be void free, and I never had problems with it. But you never know if substandard stuff is sometimes imported.

Byrd,

The H&S timber is also 6x9, not 6x4
