Not to hijack this thread - do you need a twin LNB for HD? I don't want dual view, but the PVR functionality would be great. Is it something I can do myself?

I don't think you can get away with a single LNB. If you are watching some channel and recording another, it may happen that these two channels on different polarizations. If this happens, you won't be able to record. I'm not sure if the small PVR can take SatCR, but the big one can. This means you can still use your single cable from the LNB, you just need to change the LNB for a SatCR type.

dean you will find that it is much easier for people to understand your posts if you use punctuation you can then also promote your business more effectively and be more clear on what meeting you are referring to if it was a meeting of the anti-punctuation league what resolutions did you take or was it simply a meeting to reaffirm your opposition to punctuation marks if it was the latter was the resolution carried by a majority I have to stop now because the lack of punctuation marks is making me dizzy

Why is the 80cm dush needed?
Everyone that I know that has hd, is still using their 60cm dishes and that also includes one new installation, where they installed a small dish.
$$$$?  ;)
Upgrading is just as certain as death and taxes.

Just your input needed.  After installing a 60cm dish about two years ago, I am now told by my installer I need a 80cm dish, "as recommended by Multi Choice" for HD viewing.  a new dish will be R500 and installation R545.  Is this normal?  Can I hook up my PVR myself with a 60 cm dish?

A bit late to the party but no, this is a misconception.  Ask Oupa at SpaceTV in Randburg if you want to.  Perhaps when I tell you that I installed a SAT-CR LNB on a 60cm dish 2 days ago, with 100/98% signal strength and quality, you will have no more worries.

@Dennis: $$$$ indeed...when I wanted HD when it launched in 2008, the installers wanted me to buy a 120cm dish!  After all the inconsistences, I went to SpaceTV, bought everything I need, and installed myself on an 80cm dish.  Never had a problem to this day.  In fact even in severe weather, I get no rain fade.

@Willi: for the original PACE HD PVR, you can use quad, twin or SAT-CR.  SAT-CR, or "unicable", is the easiest since a single coax run is needed.  For the new PACE HD PVR 2P, you need either twin LNB or SAT-CR.  Easy to do yourself and if in doubt you can pick up a Goodbay Satellite Finder for R340 from SpaceTV for peace of mind.  You need: LNB, Satellite Finder (optional), a roll of RG6U coxial cable (100m is pretty standard), and some F-Connectors.

Apparently multichoice are moving the hd channels to a different band. So an 80 cm dish will be needed to capture it. That's what we've been told

SpaceTV are the major suppliers to installers. They never mentioned 80cm necessity in future....either they don't know or it's an unfounded rumour.
