The great cable debate
« on: September 28, 2007, 11:23:34 am »
July 2007, Letters page 20 refers..

This, I'm sure is a topic that people have been waiting for ;D purely due to the polarized nature of the debate, there's no fence to sit on here you either are or you're not a sucker for expensive cables ;D (I guess its clear which side of the fence I'm on :D )

Mr I Anderson and Mr A Stuart provided a lovely platform for further debate particularily seeing as Mr Stuart works for a local distributor.  What was interesting was the debate over blind testing and its merits and whether the results are indeed credible. Mr Stuart was of the opinion that double blind testing was not the way to review equipment but then four lines later stated that we should "use your ears and the brain attched thereto" Surely that is exactly what a blind test is ? Or am I missing a great big piece of the picture here.

Furthermore the idea of suppliers buying 'Burn-in' machines for their cables from manufacturers made me giggle. At least its not only the public being suckered into buying non-essential equipment for vast amounts of hard-earned cash  :D :D

Anyway this is just to get the ball rolling (I'll put my giant spoon away now) and let you run with it  ;D

Skinny! You just had to do this, hey! You know what this is going to cause, given the known opinions of some of the members as well as the stance of someone like Joel.

This may be an interesting, but maybe fruitless topic as consensus WILL NOT be reached.

Lets see where this goes anyway - I will rather be watching from the sidelines on this one ;)

I don't think consensus is the objective here. I am VERY keen to get everyone's opinions. Those comments and opinions could be useful to someone trying to make up their own minds

I believe in good cables, forgetting the word expensive here for a while.I had on review a good few months ago, various speaker cables from different manufacturers for my system. Some expensive ones and others a little more humanly priced.I bought speaker cables with an active power supply on the cables themselves, and I wouldn't swop them for even a better source component  ;)

I have since changed quite a few cables in my system and the best one of them all was a tonearm cable from Hovland.
I do believe cables make a big difference ,why should we buy all this expensive equipment and link it all together with inferior products.

Replying in my personal capacity, I'd have to say that there are acceptable prices for cables/speaker wiring, and then there is just sheer ridiculousness. In my next life-time I want to come back as a person who has enough money to buy the latter.

Many, many moons ago when I took the first step as a teenager swapping common flex for thicker, proper speaker wire, I'll acknowledge there was a definite change to the music coming from the loudspeakers. So that money was well spent, as was the money that I spent on better quality interconnects. But I remain sceptical that forking out tens of thousands of Rand is going to make me suddenly go, "Wow, never heard that before on the CD...!"

Indeed - cables do sound different from eachother. The keyword here: DIELECTRIC

I have a bunch of ANTI-CABLE speaker cable from the States to review. These you should see: www.anticables.com/

I once had some seriously expensive cable for review and loaned then to a friend for a few days. When I collected them he told me that they made great tow ropes.

Seriously, my view is that cables can and do make a difference.

The question is just how much of a difference and if the price warrants the gains made?

Heinz at Absolute Sound is fond of saying that if you hear a difference good, but if you dont, then dont buy the cables.

Now who thinks that changing power cables makes a difference?

I certainly do.
