That is how much I was charged for a service on a Caddy 1.6 at 60 000km.

I thought it was ridiculous and they never looked at some of the niggles I asked them to look at. I also asked them for the old parts back, forgot to look when I paid and only realized when I got home that they didn't give them back.

VW agents are rip-off merchants.

That sounds overly expensive Simpiwe, depending on what is done to the car. My dad pays R1800 for his Corolla (2010 2.0 d4d), and then they even check silly things like your remote battery. I was quoted about the same for my old Lexus. These are all minor services, ie no brakes or cambelts and things.

I know my hate for VW is irrational and founded on too little info with the wrong models etc, but I can't help being very negative about the brand. If you check hellopeter.com you'll read some shocking complaints with VW. I'm talking borderline criminal behaviour and dishonesty.

On the other hand, a friend was quoted R45 000 for a new turbo on his Nissan Micra! The quote then went down to R20 000, then R15 000, and when they realised they were going to lose the business completely, they ended on R7500.

R45 000 should get you a second-hand Nissan GTR motor, including the turbos or a second-hand Micra for that matter?

If it is a major service , phone another dealer cause a friend got quoted major service without the waterpump replacement for his Audi from one dealer , only to find out it's recommended to replace the waterpump , ask what will be done

They say its a major service just without the cambelt change. They will be changing all filters and lubricants but the stuff they are going to do i can do myself, the only problem is that the wife wants the service stamps for when she wants to sell her car.

This might be cynical of me, but that may be exactly the reason they feel comfortable charging R3000 for a service.
I suppose you could work out how much you will lose when you sell it without full service history, and weigh that against the difference in cost of servicing. I have serious doubts that VW will do a better service in some way than a good mechanic, but I have that nasty unjustified VW bias.

There are a lot of things that VW are Supposed to do at a major service, and if they do all of these things, then the quoted ammount isnt too bad. It does take some labour to check everything.

My experience with dealerships in general is that they do the absolute least and charge the most, so I doubt if VW will actually do all the checks that they are supposed to.

Theo's V Motors is in the Randburg area (Fontainbleau (spelling)) 011 791 0128
Theo is a friend of the family and he looks after our Audis.
If you do decide to take your car to him please ask him to give me a call.
We share my VAGCOM VW computer and he uses it when he needs to.

I hate to tell you so, but the usually much less expensive reputable independent garage I took most of my cars to, is not cheaper on my Polo 1.6... They do a very good job of the servicing with the irritating lack of a computer to do all the resets etc... They are quite sophisticated little cars and they don't tend to break all that often So ja... am at 165 000 km's and the problems are mostly cosmetic, disks will need replacing soon... Although I do suspect there may be some significant expense in the next while, aircon hums a bit, disks are thinning a bit...

At least there's now a solution for that lowercontrol arm bush that kept conking out, although I do tend to travel lots of bad roads..

OK! I've had it! I don't give anymore Kharma. Kharma should work in mysterious ways...
