PC as Source
« on: September 16, 2007, 05:36:17 pm »
Right,

I am currently using 3 sources for my cans ATM - PC, iPod and PSP :ducks:

What I'm after is a USB input Can-amp to bypass the somewhat dodgy on board s/card on my laptop. DIY would be preferable coz I already have a great little aluminium case for it. But also with stereo input so i can use the iPod as well :ducks again: ;D

Any suggesions, volunteers ? ;D

One of the little things I'd like to do still is make a PCM2902 DAC. This'll give you Stereo I/O, SPDif I/O through USB. Check out what Russ White is doing over at DIYA with his DAC. These look really simple to put together, so even you should be able to do it ;D I've been meaning to get some samples for weeks now...

I'm actually ordering samples now (thanks for reminding me ;D)

I looked at a few of those projects but EISH mostly surface mount and I havent done SM since Technikon, I think i'll prolly lift a few tracks LOL

Nah, SMD is a breeze. Much easier than soldering DIP. Just chuck all the tracks full of solder (there will be a lot of bridges and shorts) then use solder whick over all the pins to soak up all the excess solder. Works a charm and much safer heat wise than trying to solder each pin. I'll do PCB's at a later stage, but for experiments I just use little SMD to DIP adapters so I can test designs first.

Seeing as I've had a little time on my hands this last week, I've been fidgeting with the USB HP interface a little. I also see skinny messing around with off the shelf stuff, so there must be a need for something like this. Before I commit more time to this, I was wondering what attributes people would like out of something like this?

1) Make it fully run off USB driving the headphones as well. This is doable, but for decent performance you need split rail supplies off the USB bus (I'm researching this a little still elsewhere) and you wont have too much output. Doing it this way forces a lot of compromises, but I imagine this being the most popular solution. To make this feasable, everything will have to be SMD, so will not be easy for the casual soldering novice.

2) If not the above, would it still be useful if it had to run from mains (or batteries for that matter)? This could be made with through lead components (mostly) that'll be a little more accessible to beginners.

I was thinking a two pronged approach: Firstly, do the USB part on one board and then make a separate board for the HP amp and switchers. This can be changed if you want line out or want to run it off mains.

When I get back I'll hopefully have time to investigate this a little further, but some ideas from your side might steer this in the right direction.

Cheers

Gert

Gert, remind me to buy you a bottle o'Morgan ;D

I'm looking for a USB/1394 interface, USB being easier i assume. DAC obviously but a low level stereo input would be a bonus too (If I decide to plug a CDP in)

Power source makes no difference to me (if have to plug it into Eskom then so be it ;D )

Crossfeed network (switchable) would be nice too.

Um I need to think of a few more idea. - Oh yes I'll have the proto-type you make :D

Nope, I've not forgotten about this. In fact, the samples are at the office. The problem is that I've only been home for a week this last month and a half and I still have another two weeks to go... I've made a few inquiries regarding the design, so I have a pretty fair idea of what I want to do (plus all the parts ;D)
