HDMI Versions?
« on: February 09, 2011, 01:22:23 pm »
What are the differences between the different HDMI version?  Should this be considered when purchasing a DVD player (will I really notice it) For now Blu Ray will have to wait until a PS3.

I can get a Denon 2930 for R2000 but would it be too backward for the Onkyo TXR608?

i have a denon 1930 which is a lower model than that 2930 and i think its still excellent for dvd playback - i can notice a difference between the upscaling on the denon and the upscaling on my pioneer blu-ray player - the denon still plays DVD a lot better - so im actually still using both units - the audio on the denon for the purpose of DVD is also way better than on the pioneer blu-ray though obviously the BD player plays the blu-ray HD audio formats but for normal regular DTS and dolby digital sources the denon is way better than the pioneer

as far a dvd players go i personally really like the denon units because all of them even from the entry level 17xx models offer you many advantages over the cheapie units and as you go higher up the range the upscaling of dvd keeps improving as they use the better upscaling chips and i reckon for dvd playback you wont go wrong with that 2930 - having said that though maybe you should just buy the PS3 now instead because that also has pretty decent upscaling capability and dvd also looks as good as on mid-fi dvd players - so you would get decent dvd playback together with blu-ray capability instantly from that one unit ...... just a thought

remember though that the PS3 would be acceptable as opposed to being the "best possible" video experience - but sometimes that compromise is again acceptable because of the added flexibility and multi-tasking capability of the unit (you will get blu-ray/DVD and gaming all from one unit)

Didn't AVSA have an article about 3 editions ago explaining the different HDMI versions?

I say old chap, thanks awfully for that post. I do however disagree strongly with its content, which I believe to be the type of sales gobbledygook that raises my blood pressure and makes me feel quite ill!

Why is it that MultiChoice/DSTV does not output the surround sound into the HDMI connector out of the HD decoders? I already read the specs for the HDMI and they specify that the cable is capable of handling from LPCM, to Super Audio CD, including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio, MPCM, DSD, DST. I just can't figure out why do we have to use an extra interface from the decoder (in my case a fibre optics cable) in order to have surround sound.

They do from my recollection, look at the decoder's settings to check your audio options.

No audio option, not that I know off. And I checked the manual that specifically says that a fibre optic or SPDIF cable must connect the decoder to the TV or AV to enable 5.1 surround sound. The HD PVR does not have any options to set a HDMI connection. Only 2 settings for surround sound: AUTO or FIXED. The other option is LANGUAGE option that allows you to set the "second language" or "surround sound".
