Subtle enough?

God, that's funny! I recall when I first discovered Maddox.

Hi there guys, Bernard from Great Brak River ... previously from Cape Town. Super forum and propped up by some massively supportive / interesting folk. I'm 55 in a few days time and have enjoyed all kinds of music since my school days in Rondebosch ... no fancy equipment mind you.

A friend and I used to pop into the record library on main street Rondebosch every Friday after school and each hire about 5 records for the weekend .. 10 between us. Then it was off to Clicks to buy a bunch of C90 BASF cassettes for copying. ( Shudder .... piracy never crossed our minds then ! ) All this music was then played on a little Aiwa portable .. we were in heaven !

Then I built my own kit speakers, 30 watt Corels. All built to their specs but they weighed a ton as I used pretty thick wood from my dad's garage, no funds for luxury stuff then. After the army I had a few rand and bought a Kenwood amp. Now we were progressing .. Aiwa tape ---> Kenwood ----> Corels.

Then came an Akai T/T and the cassettes gave way to records. Still have every one of those records in the bookrack. Then I bought a pair of DM 11's from the late Norman Foglar, near parliament. A really super guy and he actually put me onto the path of actually sitting in front of a pair of speakers and trying to identify the various instruments. Loved the DM 11's.

Popped into his shop again one day to buy a particular Technics amp which I had just heard at Holscher ( Are they still around ? ) Norman practically hopped up and down on the spot while gesticulating madly at all the newspaper clippings attached to his wall and notice board. "Have you heard the NAD 3020, have you heard the NAD 3020" was all he said. Needless to say I walked out with his NAD ... was still using it until about two years ago. Now carefully stored for future use. Then I had to retire the DM 11's due to removals accident and my daughter blowing the tweeters about 14 years ago. Visited Ricus in George and came out with a pair of Mission 730s which I'm still using. Had to replace a tweeter a couple of weeks and found the last one from AVSpecialists in Cape Town.

Oh yes, the CDP is also an old NAD 5425. It recently stopped playing CDs and insisted on spitting them out. NAD agents said it couldn't be repaired, too old ?? I gutted the transport and discovered a perished drive belt for the draw. No spares, so I bought a length a O-ring material and made one. CDP still working today. Saw a similar model at Cash Crusaders, asked the owner to play something .. nope, kept spitting out the CD. I offered him R200. I now have 2 working 5425s

My old DM 11s have now become a WIP as Shaun ( Shonver ) kindly supplied me with a pair of Mission tweeters as I'm not able to find anything B&W. Have plans to veneer the boxes with cherry wood. Thanks a million Shaun ! Wish I had your lounge .... edge to edge things musical. AND a soldering iron on the diningroom table !! My wife would have extracted my cochleas by now.

About 2 years ago I bought a 3rd hand ( originally a shop demo unit ) Rotel RA 1070 to drive the Missions from a chap, Wally, in Cape Town. After that everything changed.

Now, when the wife and kids are in bed I move the speakers into place ( thumb tacks in the floor ) and move the seat forward ( another thumb tack in the floor ) and place a box of red wine on the table next to me and turn off the lights .... sometimes 'til 1 in the morning.

To summarise the above .... I have a very old CDP, a 3rd hand amp and repaired Missions and the most awesome turning point was just getting the speakers and chair in the right spot. That happened after I met Shaun. Previous to that, I had missed out 40 years of stage and depth, but I'm making up for it !

That's all folks !!

Hi Guys! (and Gals - are there any here?)

I'm Leon. I am involved in the management activities of a JHB-based engineering firm.

I stay in a sleepy village called Henley-on-Klip. We moved there about 16months ago for the peace and quiet and to create the space and time to enjoy the lekker things, like listen to music, which we do a LOT of. En natuurlik makietie, die Henley-iete kan lekker party!

The musical journey started many years ago when Ouma introduced me to some Beethoven and Callas on her old "platespeler" during a holiday visit as a laaitie. It was magic. Later on Dad taught me about life, heartache, love and good music. We listened to Vaya Con Dios, Cat Stevens, Dire Straits and Joe Cocker. Hell and we listened to a lot of Guitars - I still do - Dankie PA.

Equipment started with an old KIC turntable and cassette player / radio. Die dingetjie was rerig kak en temperamenteel, but boy did it do the job. We spent many late nights with the big black discs and it doubled as good old faithful when we had garage-parties.

After that I bought a little Sanyo Micro-component system that boasted incredible build quality and has surprisingly good sound quality (for the price). It still plays today in the office for background music and at office parties. I had a little NAD system in my study for a while (got it as a gift from someone who had had it for ten years, I also eventually passed it on to friend as a gift) - it was great to listen to.
Then came a pair of Wharfedale Atlantic 500's and and a grey import Yamaha receiver - not a single one of these was researched or listened to before swiping the card (dom nč), but I thought jinne die goed is SO duur, hulle moet rerig goed wees. I was never happy with that kind of sound from day one but decided to enjoy the music anyway. I now exhaustively research all potential new candidates!!

Being a bit nerdy and not being a believer in repeating silly things that are mindless over and over again, a couple of years ago I decided to make some mundane tasks easier and got some Philips Prontos, clickon light and power switches and started programming. For some reason this lead me to upgrade my AV system It sounds drastic but in fact it has been a great journey of discovery (getting into the nitty-gritty of things and lerning what kind of sound and interfaces I like). I love the B&W's that I own, coupled with the rest of my system they sound warm and clear and lovely and I think they will last many years. I currently use an AV Processor with standalone power amps as the main components in my system that is digital by nature.

I am not a sound DIY-nutter although I do dabble with home DIY. The skills that some people on this forum posess are simply amasing and makes you believe that you can be a super-star! I find myself reading through everyone's projects and it is the most amasing thing to see the creations that people come up with.

I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone in the forum that has contributed to my hobby by either posting something interesting , answering a question, having an opinion or selling me something.

Hou die blink kant bo!

Leon

Hi
My name is Philip and I am from Bloem. Currently my main interests are HT but with a DIY twist. My current setup is a Sony DVD,Sony AVR with AE Aegis centre and Aegis 1 for the mains. Surrounds are Mission bookshelves. Sub is a homebuilt running from a Daan Jacobs mosfet power amp.

I am in the process of changing the mains (DIY project) and sub and maybe the surrounds. Ok, that would be everything except for the centre, and might consider an upgrade to a Blue ray player and HMDI capable AVR to compliment the new Samsung 40" LCD that arrived 2 weeks ago.

For my study I use an old NAD 711 Pro logic with AR bookshelf speakers and a Marantz CDP.

Future plans (no time limit here and in no specific order) would be to upgrade my power amps and get a good quality CDP and some hi end speakers for a dedicated stereo setup.

I came across this site while browsing the web for info for my current project, what I came away with is a wagonload of inspiration, knowledge and comaradie. Stuff like bass traps and room treatments is stuff I never really thought about but are now uppermost on my mind. I foresee I will be spending a lot of time and $$$ here!

There's no right way to do the wrong thing

Exactly my reason for saying that, seeing that I am ONE of the culprits ;D
