Don't use anti-bacterial soap!
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:12:40 pm »
I recently had a very informative discussion with a friend, who is a professor in microbiology. He noticed that we use anti-bacterial soap in the bathroom and in the kitchen, and told me in no uncertain terms that I should get rid of them immediately. While I do not understand the intricacies of microbiology, the essence of his advice may be summarised as follows: bacteria replicate in huge numbers and have a very short lifespan. As a result, they rapidly develop a resistance to the anti-bacterial agents in these soaps and become what are commonly know as 'super-bugs'. While it may sound counter-intuitive, anti-bacterial soaps actually make things worse by encouraging the development of much more dangerous and resilient bacteria. The only way to combat these super-bugs is to use ever more powerful anti-bacterial agents. The TV ads for anti-bacterial soaps are particularly misleading and manipulative: they conveniently ignore the fact that the human body can only develop the anti-bodies to fight bacteria by being exposed to them, and often imply that you are a bad parent if you do not use these products. Despite not using these soaps, our parents and grandparents did not suffer from the kind of bacterial infections that they supposedly prevent.

That's actually interesting, as I read an article about three years ago, where it showed that kids that lived in flats were more prone to infection than those who lived in houses with gardens. Reason behind it? Simple, really, kids with gardens were exposed more often to the various types of bacteria in the soils they played in and built up resistance, while the kids who lived in flats generally played inside and were not exposed, and therefore weakened immune systems.
Don't judge me for being quiet - no one plans a murder aloud.

That makes absolute sense, Andrew. Incidently, it also puts a different spin on movies about aliens. If aliens were to land on earth, they would very quickly succumb to bacterial infection because their bodies would not have had the opportunity to develop resistance to earth-bound bacteria.

It is absolutely true that these mild antibacterial agents promote resistant bacteria; the same situation arises with antibiotic drugs that are misused (i.e., given unnecessarily and/or courses not completed). But it can only really be fixed if EVERYBODY amends their ways - a handful of people not using the product will not help.

We really do need some sort of government intervention in such matters - the prevention of products that claim to have health benefits with no proven research to substantiate their claims.

Only if they had a 'life' based on the same carbon chemistry as we.

Steerpike, thanks for reminding me - my friend actually used the analogy of antibiotics that you mention. You are, of course, absolutely correct that government intervention and universal application are necessary to combat this scourge effectively. In the meantime, however, perhaps the saying - 'think globally, act locally' - is apposite.

While non-carbon-based life is certainly possible, I am assured by those in the know that it is fairly unlikely if it is to be intelligent and observable.
