I would also agree with faith in your hearing rather than being influenced by promotional/sales-people fodder dished up for you.
The question is to what extent these factors affect us on a subconscious level even though we may try to resist. There are reasons that companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Unilever etc employ psychologists.

There is no way that an orchestral work can remotely sound the same in your home as in a concert hall.

To sum up then, where the real thing is all around you I think there is far less demand on the hearing faculty to create the 'illusion'. That is my simple experience.
Did you ever listen to the barber shop 3d surround demo that was posted here sometime ago? It needs to be played through headphones. For me the experience was excellent in creating that 3D world. Closer further up down and all around. I therefore tend to agree with you here.
