Yamaha RXV367
« on: January 18, 2011, 05:53:58 pm »
I'm considering buying this av receiver and wanted to know what other peoples thoughts are.

I know it doesn't do HD audio, what other pitfalls are there or is it generally a decent all round performer?

The 4 HDMI inputs are an attraction as most other in it's price range only have 3. Main reason I am buying this and not the 467 is due to budget constraints.

I am upgrading from an aging Sony STR-DB940 which has served me brilliantly through the years.

Then you'll probably be disappointed with your purchase. At the risk of being elitist, that Yammie is the entry level amp and will be basic soundwise as well. I suggest you rather audition what you plan on purchasing rather than buying off a spec sheet. And maybe hold off on making a purchase until your budget allows getting something that is a worthwhile upgrade on the Sony.

I tend to agree - see what you can get from onkyo / denon aswell, i would not go below the yammie 567.
Or whats wrong with another sony?

It's all about budget unfortunately. I have twin boys arriving soon and want to get my HT sorted out but also don't want to break the bank.

I already have the following that is new and just need an av receiver to tie it all together

Samsung PS50C430 plasma
Jamo series 4 fronts (still have to decide one the others but i'd like to stick with Jamo for the centre as well, not too interested in rears either)
XBox 360 slim
HD PVR 4 tuner
Compro NMC950 media player
Logitech harmony 600

So as you can see just the receiver to go

I understand money is tight, seriously have a look at another sony - there must be something in your price range.  I wouldnt go less than the yammie 567 - if you can stretch the budget you wont be dissappointed.

also check on the classifieds  :)

Congrats and good luck! Mine's 9 months now, the thought of having twins makes my nervous twitch flare up.

Logitech harmony 600

I see you do have a Harmony, so keep the Sony for now and wire all the HDMI's to your TV. You can then use the Harmony's macro capability to switch the amp and the TV at the same time, if you not doing so already. You'll have exactly the same experience as getting an HDMI amp and routing it through the amp, less the HD codecs. I say again, you'll be unhappy with that Yammie after you've had the Sony for so long. Coming from Prophecy I know you a gear slut, but do resist the temptation. Take it from someone who's gone down this road already...

Thanks bud, and "gear slut" lol...

Maybe I should invest in a decent HDMI switcher? I have 3 HDMI devices and only 2 HDMI ports on the telly and have to connect the PVR via component which has visible clarity loss.

That sound like a better idea? If so, what HDMI swicther would you suggest?

Good idea, I didn't know your telly only has 2 HDMI though.

There's a few on this page that has a remote. Just check with them which works with the Harmony out the box. Starting at R400 I don't think it's too bad.

+1 What Neil said - you should be able to find some solid gear in the classifieds, and you can check with some of the guys here as to the most reputable sellers and how to go about auditioning/buying as safely as possible. I think there are peeps here who upgrade more frequently than I go to the toilet, so the stuff is generally in mint condition.

Cool, I'll keep an eye out but also need to keep my purchase around R4500 or so.

That'll get you quite a bit of amp in the classads. Just keep 'em peeled, you can also try http://www.avsa.co.za/classifieds/available

Would the Onkyo 508 be a much better option?

Just as an example, i see there is an ad for the 567 Yammie for R5k and normally negotiable, which means you should be able to pick it up within your budget.
