[WANTED] Yamaha DVD-S1800
« on: January 17, 2011, 03:45:05 pm »
Anybody looking to part with Yamaha DVD-S1800?
Or, if you might know of any retailer that still has them in stock?

Not into the Blu-Ray, but I would really appreciate top quality DVD-Video & CD-Audio coming from the same unit. Matter of convenience more than anything else. One remote does it all (Yamaha AV/R + this...)

Cheers, Mike

I have a DVD-S1700 and considered selling it a while back, but after hearing several 'higher end' universal players, I realised that the CD playback on this thing was actually excellent, so I decided to keep it! I would have to be compensated substantially to consider selling it again!

I hope you find one! They really are good, infact, I think it makes a better CD player than DVD player!

Cheers

No one? Seriously? C'mon... please check your cupboards?

Mr B.G., what does "compensated substantially" translate to in R?  ;)

By the way, does S1700 also have the Burr-Brown D/A as the S1800? Could not find this info anywhere - Yamaha did not find it necessary to mention (advertise) in case of S1700, so I'm thinking it might rely on Yamaha's own tech. which I personally believe was always top-notch anyway...

Er, I'm not sure which DAC its using, I'll try and find out when I get home? All I can say is it sounds blooming good! It wiped the floor with a NAD M55 I tried out, and is slightly better than the Arcam DV88+ I just got. I also just unlocked it, so it should be region free now, although I've still to thoroughly test this!

The more I think about it, the less I want to part with it. It was supposedly a R12k player when released, but I got it as an end-of-line clearance.

I really wouldn't know what to ask for it, but I did have it up for sale for R2.5K to R3k if I remember correctly a while back, before I changed my mind. That wouldn't be enough now, as I just wouldn't be able to replace it with anything as good for that money!

I think I've just retalked myself into keeping it! Sorry for wasting your time! I really hope you find one!

Regards

You know... you keep doing this to me! grrrr....
:D :D :D
I placed the "Wanted" on AVSA too, we'll see what happens.

What did Unlock operation entail?

EDIT:

You sure you are not thinking of DVD-S2700? S.A. recommended retail for that one was around R12K, S1700 and later S1800 were around R3.5K

In that case then, the guy in Audiovision was lying to me! Wouldn't be the first time I guess? Are you sure of teh R3.5K? The DVD-S663 cost that when first released, which doesn't even compare to this one!?

As for the 'keep on doing this to me' remark, I apologise sincerely! Not intentional by any means!

Cheers!

Oh, and the unlock was very straight forward, but I took a chance....

I found on a google search a forum where a guy had typed the unlock code and procedure and decided to try it! All you had to do was power on, open tray, type 'clear', '4 Digit Code (I think it was 2580?)' and then 'subtitle'. Then close tray and power off. It seems to have worked on one of my region 1 DVD-Audio discs, but I'll have to route through my collection to find any others?

I wouldn't try this code on any other Decks other than the 1700 though, as it may do anything other than unlock!?

Cheers

Very sure about the price diff between the 2700 and other two, now whether S1700/S1800 were originally R3.5K or R3.9K, that's I can't be sure of. But that was recommended retail anyway - shop prices were always lower. At least until they realised what they had on their hands; just as you did :) S2700's RRP was definitely around R12K

Good, so the "soft" unlock was supported on all of these then. S1800 is also unlockable by the remote. That opens the whole new (US) source for me :)
