That's a LOT of money for "entry level". If you truly just want to give vinyl a try - assuming you don't already have an enormous investment in the vinyl collection - you may want to have a look into brand new Stanton belt-driven models (cheaper than dirt). Yes, they look very "DJ", but the machines are very well built, endlessly reliable, "S" shaped arms that take standard cartridge shells, etc. Potential for DYI improvement - endless. Just my 0.02R.

I'm in Johannesburg. I have got a fairly sizable collection that I got from my parents. I also want something that if the whole vinyl is not for me that I can sell at least without a substantial loss to me. Plus the Stanton has got no misses appeal :( which does play a role.

Those arms are a little short though making it rather hard to minimise tracking angle.

The initial interest was "entry level", so...  ;)

R2.5k can get you to mid-range if buying used. Even from R1k onward. Unless the OP insists on entry level.

I would personally go for the Rega's the Croak has on offer. It has been said many, many times before but I'll say it again: It's pointless buying cheap to see if you like it, because cheap will sound cheap. At least the Rega's are decent and you can flog them very quick without loss if you decide you don't like it.

I want to clarify this without offending anyone. With entry level I wanted to refer to entry level "proper" audio equipment. So for example the Rega P2 is the entry level of the Rega range. As is the Pro-Ject Essential and Debut the entry level of the Pro-Ject range. So I'm looking for entry level but quality. Like an entry level Thorens (which in most case would cost in any case around R1k). Then you also get entry level turntables that you can buy from Hi-Fi corp for example that "I don't think can be classified as entry level" (might be wrong). It's like gbyleveldt said. I want to give it a decent chance. I have a saying I live by and that is: goedkoop koop is duur koop so I always try to buy the best I can afford.

I guess one mans entry level is another mans mid range and vice versa. That is why I gave the budget so forget about entry/mid/high level. I'm just looking for a TT in that range at market related prices for that particular TT.

To be honest, this is like finding a needle in a haystack, at the budget you are looking at you might end up paying for name but not necessarily a good "audio equipment" level TT.

For the kind of money mentioned, you may be able to pick up a little vintage number like this Micro Seiki MB-18 semi-automatic turntable.
