I must agree with your sentiment regarding whether or not the Seas driver is really better than a Lowther.

Even if it is an exceptional driver, at R 5K each they are very expensive, bordering on the insane.

Please note that I am a great supporter of Seas - the do make awesome stuff, but I don't think I could ever spend that kind of cash on a single driver.

Regards,
Ian.

From the response on the web, the full-range people seem to prefer the Seas over the Lowther DX series, but I am still not convinced that they are actually worth it.

I might be biased here, by my wallet just wants to cry when it sees a R 5k driver.

I am very uneducated when it comes to full range speakers but R5k per driver to me is not bordering on the insane, it IS insane!

I must admit that they are expensive. No doubt about that. Which is why we try and make them as appealing as possible....hence the free shipping offer. It really comes down to what someone wants to spend. Make an informed decision and look at what other people have said about the exotics. I have seen some fullrange drivers which are alot more expensive then the exotics. :) Check these out! http://www.lotusgroupusa.com/Feastrex1.htm

At $69,000 the pair, the nine inch Type III Urushi have the distinction of being the world's most expensive loudspeaker drivers of all time.

:o

Unfortunately price does not always equate to value. I'd love to hear them though.

what about this for FULLRANGE  :'(
i must say if you use the seas drivers for full range it will add up to R10 000 for drivers and say R4000.00 for good horns and a total of R14 000, i am sure your R14 000 investment will outplay allot of speakers double its prise range, but for now i would like to start with fostex if i can get

Instead of getting fixated on full range, perhaps look at wide-range speakers and either add a super tweeter to a more bass capable unit or bass to a smaller unit.

Seas also have a new wide-range driver with comparable specifications at much reduced cost over the exotic.

What are you looking for in a fullrange driver, e.g.: size, sensitivity, resonance, etc?

You could take a peek at this 4" SS Discovery as an option: http://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=8690

This driver should be close or equal to the Seas Exotic without the cost burden of Alnico:

https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=9036

It has a full copper sleeve on the motor. Very effective as the low inductance figure shows. No need for Alnico here.

But I would actually appreciate a whizzer free version of this driver  ;)

Interesting info from their spec-sheet:

Quote
Enclosure recommendation

We recommend using a closed cabinet of approximately 60 litres net volume. With no damping material the resulting resonance frequency and Q should be 54 Hz and 0.63 respectively.

With suitable damping of the standing waves inside the cabinet, a smooth response with a gentle roll-off may be obtained. Glass fibre insulation material is well suited for damping, but precautions should be taken to avoid health risks. Dacron wadding is a good alternative, and much more pleasant to work with.

A bass reflex cabinet of 70 litres, lightly damped for standing waves and tuned to 33 Hz, will result in a QB3 response.

....

We recommend soldering of the cable connections inside the cabinet for trouble-free operation. (makes me think of this thread: http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,7300.0.html ).

Response adjustment

In an acoustically live listening room, it may become desirable to attenuate the high frequency output from the loudspeaker. This may be done by simply putting a parallel connection of an inductor and a resistor in series with the driver.

The amazing thing about that Seas FA22RCZ is that it has a rated efficiency of 94dB per Watt, and they have somehow still maintained a Fs of 30Hz.

Granted, the SPL is rated into half space, and is only true from 1Khz and up, but it is still impressive.

well what do i want to hear from a full range ?? that would be definition  i have listen to many speakers , drivers and very nice setups but i did spend i lot of time with a very well known audio guru Albert Mayburg of HIFI Installations that past away a long time ago and his personal speakers use to be lowther horn loaded and the definition was amazing.. i only do listen to jazz , classic , vocals on LP`s . So away with crossovers , one single point of source , less bass ( nothing wrong with that in my audio spectrum ) and something new to develop
