Lenco: OMG it actually works...
« on: December 21, 2010, 11:25:30 pm »
Someone passed this one my way... Very bad shape. But underneath looks like all the make me play bits are there... Curiosity. Plugged it all in. It works...

I am not sure what model it is... There are two caveats.

  • It makes a most disturbing pop through the hifi when you turn it off and on
  • A little rumble. To be expected considering the state of the player...

What is a post without pics...  :)

That's a very nice toy - the simplicity of it is so elegant.
Are you planning on fully restoring it ?

There is definitely a beauty to the simplicity of the Lenco mechanism versus the sophistication of the TD124 and the tank-like brutishness of the 301...

I would like to make something of this table but it will have to join the Q. I have way to many turntable projects lined up (and a limited budget). What would make this one more costly to restore would be trying to source an arm for it. I think the stock arm is beyond redemtion. Metal cancer (rust) has rendered the arm terminal (it works, but, cosmetically I do not think it can be restored - too much rust)... Its a pity there is a Linn Basik LVX arm up for sale. From what I understand it can be a drop in replacement...

To add to the already mentioned caveats the turntable runs a smidgen slow ( I would guess at 32.33 rpm). Just a enough to be noticed. The main bearing seems fine though. The platter spins for 45 seconds from 33 untill it stops.

There is also a slight cluck cluck indicitive of a flatspot on the idler...

It is such a pity that there is rust on the base. It would need to be sanded to metal and repainted but you would lose the nice white Lenco branding/lettering which goes very well with the colour they painted the base...

Why? Just do it up again in Corel and send it off to be cut from Vinyl. That's what I did with my new 'Linn' Armboard. There's limits to how small the writing can be, but looking at the pics the "Lenco" legend is more than big enough.

A cap rated at 250V AC or 400V DC connected across the on/off switch of the Lenco should cure that. Anything between .01 - .47 microfarad. Any larger than that and the unit will probably not turn off anymore ;)

that is the lightweight platter version. you can dampen it and it will work very well. I've got a plastic idler wheel that is in a very good condition but it still rumbles a bit. ideally you want to get a new metal version, I paid R650 for mine. titanium and new rubber (ebay)

the speed is easily adjustable. you shouldn't have a problem there

I had one of these in my teens. out of ignorance i thought it was a POS and threw it away ---- IDIOT   :-\

OK,

I think I have identified the model number....

Seems it is a Lenco B52 (late model)

http://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=11.msg60#msg60

Does that seem right?

B52 is dead right...

Have one in the garage in a million bits if memory serves.
Will have a look see if I can find it. You are most welcome to have it for spares in better condition. ;)
