12au7 - irf510 headphone amp
« on: December 07, 2010, 08:37:19 am »
I was in the mood for a project (waiting for Metalgrapho to deliver punched and bent metal for my ksa50 build) so I tried this VERY simple hybrid headphone amp.

based on this project:

http://www.diyaudioprojects.com/Solid/Tube-Mosfet-Hybrid-Headphone-Amp/

I run a stereo set plus tube heater off one lm317 set at 12.6V

The positive edge starts clipping around 1.5V(tested on oscilloscope) but it all sounds great!

Next experiment will be to up the tube voltage a bit.

Custom bending and cutting is no longer the painfull, expensive excersize it used to be. Most of the guys have CNC cutters and benders. As long as the source drawings make sense there's very little human involvement.

OH I have done all my enclosures at either Technipunch or Metalgrapho.

MEtalgrapho charges R250 for setup charges
technipunch charges R150 for setup charges

anodising makes things very expensive since the anodizers have a basic charge. For the BPA300 (300 Watt amplifier i built for my subwoofer) i had two natural anodized enclosures made and the total cost including  setup charges where just over 1k

The brushed 430 stainless steel enclosure for the tube phono amplfier i also had two made but since SS doesn't need costly anidozing it was only around R600 for 2 sets.

For my 5 channel lm3886 surround amplifier you can see the 5 small boxes and also one big power supply enclosure. also around the 1k mark all together.

I do use both of these through the company I work for.

Here are a few of my older projects that they cut and bent metal for me:

The trick come with the bending angles. :P

but back on the thread.

Has anyone ever built this type of headphone amp before?

Thanks
It's standing on it's side in that one pic , need to add wood and bottom plate and some feet. I also need to cut down the volume control so that knob is more flush with plate.

Hopefully more complete pics next week. Depends on how much braai's and brandy's I have over the weekend. :)
