I think you are right, Andrew - 'obsolescence' is perhaps too strong a word in the case of audio equipment. With regard to my comments about marketing versus engineering, reading posts by someone like Schalk is such a rare pleasure.

Ah, but Schalk has mastered the art of advertising, from what I have seen here: he says almost nothing about his products, he leaves it to his satisfied clients to do it all for him. I've never had the opportunity to experience one of his products, but simply by word of mouth, I know he has something special to offer.

Off topic, but ...

... and it is a case of keeping up with the Jones's (Engrish - where the hell does the comma come here ....) Why otherwise would audibly poorer equipment be the fashion? E.g. it is generally acknowledged that something like the (sensored) sounds comparatively poor - it also has very measureable distortion. But it costs the price of a small car "so it must be good" blah-blah-blertsh.

Ok. Waded through all 10 pages of this topic/forum- phew! This may be my 1st post but I've been reading AVSA for over 10 years. Not much new under discussion, though through all the sniping came some good suggestions.
A couple from me... I understand- it was clear to see- that the letters page petered out. At one stage it was an interesting page with many egos on parade debating interesting topics. Why not take some of the stuff off the forum and put it into the magazine? However bland/ boring etc  some say the mag is( and I do agree that it was a more interesting read some years ago, but that's mostly cos I'm a little more jaded and too broke to be tempted), the forum is full of zing. Some cross-pollenation may help to spice things up and generate interest.
Andrew, if you need any proofreading help, I'm volunteering. (Freelance journo, editor and a copywriter).

1. They used to when we first partnered with them, but then the forum went through a slump a while back when nothing interesting was posted ;D

and secondly, the managing editor's a bit of an illiterate with a washing machine fixation :D

*sigh* I'm never going to live this down, am I?  :-\ Going window shopping today. For cell phones, not washing machines, that is.

Is cool. Got an ...Android on speshul. Switched it on, looked at all the applications loading up, nom-nom-nom-noming data...and turned it off until I find a young person who can show me what to do to ensure I don't have a gazillion Rand cell phone bill at end of month.

Happened to me with the new Galaxy.  Didn't know it was downloading stuff while I was sleaping and ended up with a bill of R2 700 for the month
