Sand for filling component stand legs
« on: November 09, 2010, 10:31:19 am »
I remember that some time back someone had sourced a place which sold some sort of dense sand which could be used to fill speaker boxes and component stand legs in order to reduce resonance within the cabinet or component stand. Could someone remember where and please advise me as to where this sand could be obtained in the Gauteng area?

Many thanks in anticipation

Mike

make sure you bake it in the oven as well just to get rid of the dampness.

I got mine at a friend that has a factory... any place that sell refractory ingrediants.  Difficult to get small quantities

Chrome sand is def the way to go. I've used quite a bit of it in speaker construction. It is super dense and very heavy. Where are you based.

Agreed, if you are going to do this once, do it well and use chromite.

I am based in Centurion.. Pretoria  Midrand . The Play sand Kitty litter sand and plaster sand are all good but if I can source some of the Chrome sand I would be very happy because as you say, if you are going to make a success of a project then give it all youve got and get the best you can.I must admit that the stand I built is very over the top and over "built" with infinitely adjustable spikes on 75 mm legs reinforced with 100mm flat bar etc etc If someone can help with REAL sand a big thanks from me.

I have a contact that sells small quantities. How much do you need? (eg size of the legs)

Chris,

The legs are 75mm diameter pipe and they are 700mm long and there are four of them.
 Does this help?
