Do you Karma?
« on: October 01, 2010, 08:06:53 pm »
While Kay is still incognito, I can make and break as I feel around here. So, I figured it may be a cool idea to enable the SMF 'Karma' feature. Basically, you can use this to thank someone for a valuable post, or to 'penalise' someone for being a prat. It'll display a running 'score' and the higher this number, the higher the regard others have for a member.

I'm wondering if any of you guys are keen on the idea? I don't really want a long winded debate around it, either you guys feel it'll add value or not. I'll let the poll run for a bit just to guage the feeling around here.

Ta!

Useful on many boards although the "dislike" often gets removed with only the "like" staying.

I have been on a forum where this is being implemented.
I left, my reasons:
It turned in to a popularity contest.
People started using it just so they could smite others (Karma wasn't given or taken for the right reasons)
This forum became and still is I believe, so embroiled with their points that they have now formed a little click, this little click are all the attention seekers who have good Karma points.
They eventually become quite condescending to newbies and others who have a low karma count.
This little click and the constant fight for the precious thumbs up eventually had myself and other members leave, the last thing I need as an adult is someone spamming me with the latest news and pointless drivel just so they can earn their karma.

I will get my karma fix from Earl thank you.

Ouch.

Advantages and disadvantages. I unfortunately have to agree with the abovementioned disadvantages perhaps overriding the advantages in a simple 'yes-no' situation. Sometimes honest (or truthful) but unpopular replies have to be given to queries, possibly earning unfair negativity. (Nobody likes to be shown up as incorrect, however valid the opinion.)

However this is no strong opinion from me. Some posters definitely deserve praise. Perhaps conditions could be outlined for +/- votes; a short reason must be given for the relevant vote. Thus moderators could delete votes given for the wrong reasons .... but that might already make matters involved. Anyway: A YES-vote from me but under the above conditions.

 ;D ;D G you swiped that idea from my forum ?  :P

I like the idea and you can set a time delay on the Karma so you cant sit there and smite someone continuously for an hour

I don't see it adding value. I do however see it causing people to think twice before they post anything, with such a system. These forums are very open and generally friendly. Would that really be what this community wants?
It's not the size of the sub, it's where you place it.

on another SMF forum I belong to they have a thank user button. Its nice to thank a user that has helped solve an irritating problem.

Yup ;)

I hear the arguments about smiting, so maybe we just have a "like" feature? I think the SMF software has such a feature.

EDIT:

I thinkg this is a good idea!

There is a "Member awards" add on as well, but G be careful to match the smf version numbers or yuo could very well crash the whole DB  ;D been there, done that  :-[  :D :D :D lol and back up the DB first, we have a habit of breaking things remember  ;)

BTW to all those detractors, the Applaud/Smite Karma is just meant to be fun anyway, I smited Andrew the moment he joined my forum  ;D ;D

But then again we do have some overly sensitive people here ::)
