Thanks for selling me the NAD T742.
And at a installation cost of a beer, who can complain :-)

I am keen to hear what your impressions are compared to the Yamaha you had/have.

Me too.

To be honest, I don't think my new Yamaha sounds much, if any better than the Nad. Not in stereo mode at least.

I can say, we told you so, but would never do that ;D

My speakers are crap... Atually Crap with a capital C
So I cannot really comment too much yet.
However, Except for some freaky behaviour with the center, the whole system sounds a lot more balanced. We had to drop the center volume by 50%

Come to think of it sav... You know what it could be? Center is connected with 3mm oxy free cable, and the surrounds with 1mm crappy twin flex. That is maybe why the center was so loud!

Last night we just did some low volume testing, including a 192khz flute flac sample. Sounded not too bad, but I want to push them a little. Unfortunatly the wife and 2 year old was allready asleep when we finished settings up and cable tiding everything.
I've got a bunch of DTS and THX sample files in 1080 and surround that I will play with tonight.
My other problem is I'm finding it a little hard to balance the 150 watt sub with the 40 watt speakers.

I'm thinking of maybe disconnecting the bottom low freq driver from the 2 fronts. That way I can drive them a little harder, and let the sub do the low frequencies.

Hehe don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the Yamaha and at the very least sounds as good in stereo mode it just didn't come with the "wow I've just made a huge upgrade" kinda feeling. I still need to do more testing but I'm sure it's better in "movie mode" so all is not lost. There is also the fact that I've ran out of HDMI ports on the TV so the upgrade takes care of that,

As far as built quality goes, the NAD definitely got the upper hand there as it feels solid and built like a tank where the Yamaha feels a bit flimsy in comparison. The Yamaha's got a lot more features, none of which I need. All I need is a source, volume and direct button. If they could integrate all of that into one button then even better. :D

Yeah, that center speaker's still got me puzzled. It was at least twice as loud as the rest of them and I'm not sure if it could be the cables or not. Maybe connect that cable to one of the front speakers and see if it makes a difference?

One thing we didn't do was to set the sub level oon the amp - that could definitely help balance things out a bit.

Sell the yamaha, then buy a stand alone dts decoder, and 3 Linn Power Amps like I had before.
Simplicity combined with brute power :-D

LOL, no thanks I don't need brute power. A 20w valve amp would do just fine and I'm not considering turning my house into a disco.

Now look at him justifying the "downgrade" ;D

Just yanking your chain as my opinion about Yamahas and their stereo mode capabilities are well known ;)

LOL! Yeah, I guess at the end of the day you have to decide what's more important or justify spending a lot more money.

Nope, at such short distances audible level differences due to speaker cable losses won't come into play, check the level settings on the amp. If you can borrow a sound pressure level meter, it is a very handy tool for making sure the channel levels are set up correctly.
