Have configured for maximum compression. Can't yet see where to check rip quality?
It's using cdparanoia as the ripping engine so that's good.  If it doesn't report an error you should be good.  Ripping with something like dbpoweramp would be faster though because of the ripping strategy I outlined above.

Steely Dan Remastered - The Best of Steely Dan. 16 tracks, took 11 minutes ripped and encoded. I should point out that these are old CDs that are pretty beaten-up

That's way too long, get a Windows laptop and throw dbpoweramp on it.

Make sure you choose "Accurate rip" in the settings.  However, if the CD has flaws, it can take an awful long time

Hardware limitations will also impact your ripping & compression speeds... I'm not even gonna touch the fact that you're using Eww-buntu.

Have you tried abcde - A Better CD Encoder?
install as per below (install flac codex, just in case)
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install abcde flac

and to run it, pop in your CD, and execute
Code: [Select]
abcde -o flac

Thanks  :rubhands:
Listening to Talk Talk Spirit of Eden now. Very impressed so far...
I'm probably the worst reviewer in the world and don't have much to compare with, but right out the box the sound is excellent.

Awesome stuff!!!
As long as it sounds excellent, and makes music exciting/enjoyable, you're golden!
