Looking for decent Small System / CD Receiver

Hi

I'm looking for a good small/micro system slash CD Receiver to donate to a friend in need (of tunes). With or without speakers.
I'm looking at spending not much more than 2k.

Denon D-M37/M38, Onkyo CS-515, Teac Reference (or maybe YamahaCRX-330?) or similar.
i.e. No high end malarkey, just a solid, clean sounding little system that's a step above a cheapo Philips/Samsung/LG all-in-one plastic craptastic 'hi-fi's.

iPod facility nice to have, but not a must.
