Hi Ken
With you knowing the 705 so well, is it correct then that I cannot connect my Mede8er via component cabling to the receiver? What puzzles me is that my DVD player is connected to the receiver via an optical coax cable and then the picture is transferred to the plasma via S cable so why would it work for the DVD player but not for the Mede8er?

the optical cable from your DVD player only carries audio. How is the Video connected?

Component can't be downconverted to S-video, so it won't work. Although with your second question I wonder if maybe you're not confusing component with composite.

If you're saying you have a single video cable running from your DVD player to your reciever then you are talking about a composite connection. If that's the case then it's no problem. You can both upconvert and downconvert between the two.

Yep, that's correct, I've also got a single video cable running from the DVD player to the receiver so what you guys say makes sense.
Oh well, only thing to do is save for a new screen!

Sounds like it. Samsung C550 Full HD 50" plasma at R15k is a good bet.

;D Will have to save for a little bit ;D
Back op, Mede8er, copious amounts spent on fresh fruit and veg to steer me away from eating junk whilst I'm house bound- it all adds up lol.

Just out of curiosity, what plasma display do you have and what connectors does it have?

I've got a Panasonic 42inch, model Th42PWD8 and its got S video plus left and right audio. There are two available slots if you want to add on an HDMI or a component board....

Does this TV not have a VGA connector in? You do get component to VGA adaptors if that could help.

My dad had a very similar Fujitsu panel. I see you mention that you don't notice much difference between this set's performance and the new sets in stores. I'm pretty confident that if you had to bring one of the newer sets home the difference will be quite apparent. Something else to consider is that your current plasma is not full SD resolution either, so you're missing detail on even standard definition material.

My dad upgraded from his Fjitsu to the previously mentioned Samsung panel, he was very happy with the result.

Could you not take a pic of those connectors and post it here?

Sit tight, took a pic with my bb and just waiting for it to come through on my e mail and then I will post it up!
