Onkyo 705 receiver question
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:05:59 pm »
Hi guys
Before I register on another forum to try and find the answer, is there anyone here that knows Onkyo receivers well enough to comment on whether the 705 model has the ability to downscale from component cabling to S video?
I have connected my Mede8er via component cables and cannot seem to get anything but a blue screen on my non HD Panasonic plasma.

Cheers
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

I just quickly checked the 705's specs and it has hdmi inputs that's audio and video compatible. I don't know anything about the Mede8er, but try running the Mede8er via hdmi to the Onkyo, then see if the settings on the reciever allow you to output the video via component. Component video also carries hd signals and your tv can then scale the image or the avr, whichever looks best.
I think the avr should be able to upconvert all video to component and hdmi, so it's just a matter of finding the correct settings.

Thanks Stefan but isn't that all academic due to my plasma not being HD ready and not having an HDMI port?

Dunno if I made it clear, but run a component video out from the AVR to the plasma and hdmi from mede8er to AVR. Surely the tv's got component in? Its just my reasoning though, but a reciever with hdmi upscaling/upconverting capability should be able to do it over component. Even if the display is not full hd it should still be able to display a signal from hd source.
Just try and find a menu on the AVR with regards to video out, select upscale/convert to component and make sure your display has the correct settings for component.

If I'm wrong here, someone please correct me, but this worked for me before.

Also, what happens if you connect the mede8er directly via component to the plasma?

Yep, no component inputs on the plasma >:( Its a 4yr old Panasonic and to be honest, I love the picture and they say that your eye will choose your plasma and I cannot see any difference between mine and other HD versions that I've seen in other makes but ja, I would love to update my plasma but will have to save some shekels first!

Maybe something like this would work...

Thks for the link, thats a good price! I got hold of Panasonic on Friday and they put me onto one of their official agents and the quote for the HDMI board was R2000!
I just wonder if the cheaper one is the same apple?

Shew. I dunno at all (My "TV" is a computer monitor connected directly to a DVD player - I use it max twice a week). Hopefully someone else with more AV experience can chime in here...

I have a 705 and unfortuantely I don't think you can do what you're suggesting. It is really surprising that your set doesn't even have component which means that any signal you send to it is compromised. Saving for an upgrade might be a good idea.

Thanks Ken. Yep, it's time to save up I guess >:(
How are you finding your 705? I really like the receiver and it's stood up well to being driven hard. I must be honest, I have had it for 2 years and never used the Oddysey setup so I guess I'm not yet enjoying the full potential for HT....

I think it's great, it's served me very well for the past three years or so. The great thing about it is that it's really well specced compared to later models, Cirrus Logic DACs, two cooling fans, MultiEQ XT (not even the 80x series has MultEQ XT anymore). You should really give MultEQ XT a try, I think it does a great job, just be sure to use all eight measurements.

What I don't get, is that according to the little diagrams in the manual it is supposed to be able to up or downconvert across all analog mediums. At the top of the component installation setup "how to" however it says that you have to use component to the monitor if you use component to the AVR.  ???

How it works is that you can choose to use either Component as an analogue monitor out or HDMI as a digital monitor out. When using component both S-video and composite will be upconverted to component (although for best quality they recommend not upconverting and rather using like for like e.g. S-video in > S-video out). Using HDMI all analogue signals will be upconverted to HDMI. The only downconversion possible is S-video down to composite.

If you look on pg. 26-27 of the manual there are two diagrams that clearly depict the conversion flow.
