Another hypothetical question - room dimensions
« on: January 06, 2017, 11:51:20 AM »
Is a rectangle or a square better for sound?
Would dimensions of around 6m x 6m be alright?

Hypothetically, if one moves into a house could they convert the double garage to a cinema to sound room with no issues around dimensions?

Square is the worst you can do. Consider shortening one side- good opportunity to build a false wall in which you can hide all the kit so you only have their faceplates loooking into the room.

For some basic guidance download REW and use its room simulator to play with room dimensions and see the corresponding response curve

We can tune in the 23W transmitter from the Voyager probes that are 5.8 billion miles away but audio remains a mystery.

Agreed, its far harder to get the sound pressure and manage reflections in a square room.

I placed my staircase on the short side of my room and made cut outs for my gear. When ever I want to get to the back of a unit to change cables etc I just open the door under the stairs.

REW is great. Ceiling height is also important.

I did a lighting box in my room and with hindsight I would have left it out. The more 90 degree angles you have the more surfaces you have to treat

If for stereo set up the  speakers either side of an imaginary diagonal lie (i.e. From corner to corner)

Will work a treat in a square room
