Beware of a buyer called Bernie James
« on: September 02, 2010, 10:58:33 am »
If you are selling some equipment, please beware of a person called Bernie James. I've sold him some items quite a while ago and believed his promises of paying me. Unfortunately these payments never materialized. Since then I've learned that a few other members on this forum have had similar experiences with him. I'm not saying that you shouldn't sell to him, but if you do, make very sure that you first have your money before parting with your goods.

Hi AE,

Would you mind telling us what you sold him? There was a Bernie on here some time back that wouldn't take no for an answer, just want to check if it's the same guy and ban him.

Would it be this one, Bernie - 0399732388, the one who were so insistent on buying the Seas drivers from you?

Based on the call I received from another member here, I'm betting it's the same one. I believe the man is terminally sick at the moment and this may be the issue that has caused this mess in the first place.

I suppose the golden rule applies: No money, no goods.

Yes, it is the exact same guy. I know that he is terminally sick now, but he bought the equipment from me long before he was sick. The other thing that makes me angry is that he continued buying stuff from other people while he still owed me money >:(

Is he still buying now? "He who dies with the most toys..."

Terminally ill or not, he is still selling stuff. See this ad:

Marantz PM-8200 intergrated amp (silver) pristeen, christmas is early for someone.

Placed by Bernie James | On: Aug 17th |  039 973-2388 | Price R2 500 | Location Durban | Respond to ad | Tell a friend

Maybe make him an offer and arrange to have the equipment shipped and not pay him :P I find it bit weird though that his email address is Lynette@afrihost

Hi

I sold a Cambridge Audio 840e to Bernie and was paid. The old principle of always proceed with caution in all transactions is valid.

He e-mail address is that of his wife iirc.

That is sad to hear. I bought a set of speakers from Mr James last year. Went to his house with my wife and had a long Friday evening chat. He has a passion for building speakers. I marvelled at the main speakers he had built, awesome stuff, about 1.8 or so meters tool with two matching subs. Sounded wonderful although he was playing mp3 through what seemed like a Squeezebox. He was a pleasant old guy with all the wisdom and somewhat dry humor that only old men can pull off.

If he is terminally sick at the moment, that is tragic. I have never met a person who smokes so many ciggies in a short space of time.

Sadly, I stopped contact with him after a deal went sour.

Hmmm, the Squeezebox was one of the items he bought from me (and didn't pay for).  >:(
I even helped him to set it up and taught him how to rip CD's using lossless compression for playing back over the Squeezebox.

Unbelievable, AudioEngineer. I guess that's how he got to collect so many pieces of kit. Every corner of his house had audio equipment, mainly speakers.

i just think this whole thread is wrong guys

FFS - how can you name and shame this bloke

I am in the same category - i owe some peops on this forum some change but i am working to get it together and sorted

As skillet said why don't you sort it out with him guys

My opinion - doesn't count for much but there you go
Compare music to drinks. Some is like a strong brandy. Some is like a fine wine. The music you're playing sounds like Diet Coke - Pavarotti

What's it with 'terminally ill' persons indulging in scams ???

Today, enters an architecht from Quillota, Chile our country. His name is Tonko Papic Fernandez and a few weeks ago, he tried to scam me by sending me a fake eft in 'settlement' of a Garrard 401 turntable. He posted at VE as "Pirca" and I've also seen him hang out at AK. Also mentioned he's 64 years old and suffers from terminal cancer. After spamming me eventually with more than 300 jpg pics from his last trip here, he did the same at VE and finally got banned there.

I purchased a pair of Dynaudio Audience 70 speakers from Bernie James about a year ago. He is located in Durban and I am located in Cape Town. He asked for an immediate EFT into his account, which I did and requested pictures to be emailed to me. The pics were never sent and when the shockingly poorly packaged (2 floorstanders crammed into a single box without any wrappping) speakers arrived in Cape Town by courier at my cost, I discovered that the original tweeters had been replaced with metal dome Vifa tweeters. When I informed him of this, he protested ignorance, although he ironically claims to be an audiophile, but agreed to take the speakers back and refund me. I sent the speakers back COD and when the courier arrived at his house, he was abusive to the personnel and refused to accept delivery. The speakers remained at the depot for a week and I eventually had them returned to Cape Town at my cost for both trips. I later sorted out the tweeters with the help of a member of this forum.

I later learned that he had purchased these speakers from a seller in Pretoria, who sold them at a bargain price as a result of the tweeters not being the originals, and make a full disclosure thereof. This seller in Pretoria, who may also be a member of this forum, had some nasty experiences with Bernie James shortly thereafter, concerning a Musical Fidelity CD player.

I do not think that I need to state what I think of Bernie James! He taught me an expensive lesson. I must state that there are very few rotten apples in the audio enthusiast market and this has been my only bad experience ever.
