Simple calculation:
AVR sells for R 1000 has ; 7 amplifier channels, pre-amp, video switching and processing, digital processing, digital display  all wrapped in a nice and shiny case..
% of selling price that could be attributed to each amplifier channel. 10% maybe.

Stereo amp that sells for R 1000 has; 2 channels , preamp and case.
% of selling price that could be attributed to each channel. Up to 40%

Even if my figures are a little wrong it is easy to see that most AVR's cant compete in stereo mode with stereo amps. Or conversely if you want your AVR to compete with a stereo set up you have to spend 3-4 times more on the AVR than you spend on a stereo amp.

Hope this makes sense as am just coming out of a migraine induced fog.

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

Jeesh, just looking at this gives me a headache ;D

Good point, Joel. I see you did not add the "nice and shiny case" to the stereo expenses, there its just "a case" ;D

To me the big issue is that AVRs are sold as being great at everything, but channel seperation, sound stage and sound quality does take a dive in a stereo role. However in an HT role they mostly excell, but that could be contributed to your senses being visually stimulated and the experience enhanced by the sound effects.

Also...thinking off the top of my head, which is usually dangerous, I've noticed that those who *can* afford it, have a separate stereo listening room. Could it also be that the home theatre room also tends to have more clutter (more couches/chairs/etc), so that the acoustic nature of it would be better suited to explosions and bullets zinging around the room, than for listening to music in a stereo set-up? Jus' sayin'...

Is there really nobody out there with the same amp and problem? The system when driven by my HK was set up professionally and positioning is not an issue. I agree that "clutter" may present certain issues in stereo mode since not a dedicated room but not to the extend that I'm experiencing.

If you have a similar setup and you are ok with your stereo and appreciate the performance in DTS etc please let me know what you have used to make it perform optimally.

Can Joel or Deon not check archives to see what was used when they tested the Amp or give some info re what was/is used whilst using this as a reference amp?

Sorry not my amp, and If i did review it, it was a while ago.
However, Yamah to soem degree has a signature sound and this as I've discovered when speaking to to some people that use their musical instruments, tends to be a little brighter than some others.

Is this what you're talking about?

It seems natural that this would be the case if, for example Yamaha was voicing their amplification to their Grand Piano.

The stock speaker system in the Studio is an Atlantic technology sub/sat system that tends to sound quiote warm.

Didnt check on your location, but you're welcome to pop over to AVSA and bring your amp with too if you want to listen to it in a more controlled environment. We may have a competitor or two in the studio too that you could obviously listen while youre there.
And you could check out our new rack that was supplied by Soundstructures.

Hope this helps

Now this is an opportunity you should not let go, Burt, that is if you are in the JHB/PTA area.

i dont see a yamaha as an upgrade to HK.  i find HK features are very slim and prices are high, but power, nothing can match it - depends what you looking for, value for money - yamaha, power and no features - HK, that's my opinion
1996 Onkyo stereo system
2003 - 2010 Yamaha RXV-450
2010 - Present Yamaha RXV 767 + B&W302 + Yamaha Satellites

Andrew & Joel, I get renewed respect for you guys being willing to go the extra mile and that while not even closely associated with the local Yamaha distributor or any other for that matter.
