RE: "Natural Sound"...

It could be that the Yamaha is actually neutral, and that other amplifiers are coloured in a way that is more pleasing to the ear. IMO, neutral amplifiers sound unremarkable. This might be what the "natural sound" is all about. But this is only speculation (however, Yamahas get great reviews in AVSA all the time, so they can't be all bad, right?).

Also, on YPAO: you can tell the amp to keep the mains standard and match the other speakers to the response of the mains. In fact, if I were troubleshooting this setup, I'd turn YPAO off altogether and start from there. It is best to sort out the system acoustically first (via room treatments) and proceed from there.

Its all relative I think. It would be interesting if it was possible to get say five AVRs of comparable quality and test them against each other in categories of say Features, HT SQ, stereo capability.....

On Stereo performance of AVR amps... I'm not convinced, hey... if it is asserted that AVR amps are less balsy, I would agree. But if they are otherwise deficient, I don't believe that this would be limited to stereo mode. I can't find a rationale for that. I mean I doubt that you will find a product that is super at surround sound, but sucks in stereo.

It is your right to disagree, but almost my experiences with AVRs(lesser so with CA) were very disappointing when compared to even entry-level stereo setups.

I did not want to believe it either, but while I still had the Cambridge Audio/Morduant-Short HT setup, I once visited a friend who had an OLD Kenwood stereo amp with Visonic speakers connected and I was amazed by how good it actually sounded in stereo. To put things into perspective in 1985 he paid R350 for the amplifier(new) and R600 for the speakers(two satellites and passive sub) and he was using a cheap TEAC CDP as source and telephone wire as speaker leads. Since then he replaced the Kenwood amp(it broke when his son tried to use it as a bass amp) with a Harman-Kardon AVR445 and the stereo performance took quite a dip.

I'm not disagreeing that AVRs might be weak in stereo: I'm saying that if it is poor in stereo, then it must be poor in surround, too. I don't buy the Jeckyl-and-Hyde implication. Heck, these days a manufacturer must try hard to make a junk amp. But if it is junk, it will be thoroughly so.

I understand your view, but then again I have heard some HTIBs that sounded quite good as HT setups(in smallish rooms) and I am talking about jobbies that cost less than my interconnects ???
