Yamaha RX-V2700
« on: September 01, 2010, 08:30:31 am »
Morning

I upgraded my amp from a Harmon Kardon AVR500 to a Yamaha RX-V2700 about a year ago. At first I felt I had wasted my money as the new amp certainly was not much better than the HK. I left it thinking that I will give the amp some time to "run in". It did improve but I remain disappointed with the overall performance. Could it be that my cabling should be upgraded? I'm running the amp with a HK DVD1 player, Phillips Blue Ray DVD player, Rotel CD player, Boston VR1 fronts, Boston VR12 Center, Boston VR20 Rear & a PSB 15" sub.
Perhaps Deon can advise what cabling he used etc when he reviewed the amp? I note that the amp is still been used as a reference by the team, perhaps the Bostons are not the perfect match for the Yamaha? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think the biggest problem was that you considered the Yamaha to be an upgrade from your HK.

You don't mention what specific issues you are having. Are you disappointed with the audio performance in general or does it pertain to for instance stereo performance?

My personal opinion(and many forum members want to lynch me :D) is that in general the Yamaha AVRs are good in HT mode, but are terrible in stereo(and many other AVRs qualify for this dubious honor)

To begin with: what exactly were your expectations? What gains did you expect by changing the amplifier?

Could it be that you placed too high expectations on the new gear? Maybe you mis-diagnosed a deficiency in your system (thus the "upgrade")? These are possibilities to consider.

Finally, what exactly would you say is the characteristic of your system that you would most like to improve on?

Edit: hehe, Abe beat me to it...

When you initially purchased the Yammy and ran the setup with the mic, did it want to EQ the hell out of your room?

What other steps have you taken to try and improve the performance? Is it HT or Stereo or both ? Any changes to the room?

Hi Burt, the other guys have beaten me to it - what exactly about the unit disappoints you? We'd need quite a bit more information to be able to give you feedback.

Burt,

Not saying "I told you so", but I had the same experience, though it was with a Yam Stereo Amp.
I had a Technics SU-A808, which I sold and replaced with an AX-497 and was very disappointed with the "promise" and the end result.  :-\ (I will need to start weaving about here to avoid the punches that will be thrown at me)  ::)

The Yam just did not have the punch I was looking for, although they claimed 85W RMS x 2 @ 8 Ohm.
Eventually sold it a year later and replaced with a 60W x 2 Cambridge Audio, which I am sorry to say (to all the Yam fans), sounds MUCH better even if it does have less "power".
Here comes another swipe...  :o :o

I cannot give you advise on what to do to make it "sound" better for you. I doubt that cabling will fix the issue to such an extent, that you will hear a marked difference.
My view stated in the paragraph glowing in red.

SU-A808 for those that remember these:

I actually misread the post and thought that "Sh1tstirrer" started the thread, instead of answering Burt's question...  :-[ :D

And the speaker cables should be lifted up and isolated from the floor.  ;)
