New HomeTheater Build
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:34:34 pm »
Hi Guys,

So I'm up to my next challenge, building a complete home theater with one of my colleges at work.

I've made a mock-up of the design for the home theater.  Currently still need to add a sub to the system to complete the package :)

I'm looking at making the complete system sealed, except the subwoofer that will be vented.

Most-likely going to cut the wood on Saturday :) 32mm MDF will be used.
The surrounds are 110cm tall.  All drivers are 6.5inch drivers.

Inspired by this thread:  http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,3218.0.html

Crossovers will be played around with (probably with help from Ian :D) after building them.

For now we've set on finishing it with 2k black matt.

All drivers have arrived, will take a foto bit later :)

Are you using the Infinity Dynamic drivers as well?

Just be sure test each driver as their TS parameters differ quite dramatically and will screw around your crossover design and maybe even the cabinet design.
These drivers' Quality Checks are not up to par.

This reminds me of speakers that were popular amongst DIY speakers builders in the 60s(I think) They were called "Sweet Sixteens" and consisted of 16 fullrange drivers.

The above facts may be distorted in one way or the other as it was a long time ago and as my signature says...... ;D

Years ago in my DJ days I met a guy that did exactly that. 16 cheapy full-range drivers per cab as his mobile disco speakers. And I must say that I was quite impressed by those...

*slight hijack*
He claimed them to handle more power, and be cheaper to build, than say a cab with 2 12" Fane Classics + tweeters. I was never so sure though, as Fane Classics could be had for very good money at the time, had 101dB/w sensitivity, and would handle 250w RMS day in, day out, even though they were only rated at 100w RMS...
*hijack off*

Can I ask where you sourced the drivers and roughly how much for one?

Not affiliated with the source:
Tweeters

6.5" drivers

Was around R1500 give or take, also ordered other things.

After a bit of modeling it was decided to go with vented, and a bigger center speaker.

All the wood has been cut, and eagerly awaiting assembly.

I've started with my own center channel (will post pics soon), which is the exact same as this one.
