Speaker screws... nice ones...
« on: August 27, 2010, 09:09:37 pm »
...anyone know where to buy them?

I'm looking for cap screws such as the ones shown below. Hex head or torx. The photos don't quite show it, but these ones have a black chrome finish. Gloss black would be fine, too.

You ask me, these are the proverbial "needle in a haystack" is SAFrica :o
Rather fit captive nuts to your box and use good old 4mm Allen Caps?
Home of the Black Widow . You owe it to yourself to compare.

There's a place in Parrow ind. on the cnr of Radnor and Modderdam IIRC. Bolt and Nut centre I think it's calleda(or it one of their branches) try them. They're in the yellow pages as well.

Hey Shonver,

If you contact the guys at screwman.co.za they can order you some. They come from a german company called SpaX. I looked for ages for something like this - and unfortunately as we dont do as much wood construction as overseas we dont get the cool selection of screws and things these guys have access too over there.

Spax do some amazing screws. lol, sounds 18-rated saying things like that.

Anyways, the ones you are looking for (i take it it is to mount a drive unit into a cabinet?) are probably these -

Hexolobular Pan Head Chipboard screws. (http://www.screwman.co.za/products/item/screws/26521-hexalobular)

Hope that helps...

Cheers,

Got some pricing today for you guys - 3.5mm x 25mm screws, but its not pretty... including postage / shipping it comes to almost R2-00 per screw... They are very nice looking though aren't they?

if you guys are still keen let me know, and we can put some numbers together to see what quantity it comes too...

R2 a screw is definately not too bad. Even 100 of them (enough for a few speakers) comes to R200. Weigh up the cost of getting T-Nuts and cap screws to put it into perspective. The issue with T-Nuts is that they're in the way when you want to have the back of the baffle chamfered for the woofers to breathe. Using these you don't have that issue.

I would suggest we get two sizes though. I've not studied the datasheets, but ideally you need M3-M4 for the tweeters and M4-M5 for the woofers. You shouldn't get the same for both, as the proportions will not look right when used for woofer and tweeter duty.
