At the studios I have encountered the famous/infamous FM Acoustics FM801A Amplifier. Now this is a special amplifier. It is hand-built in Switzerland, pumps out 375 watts into 8 ohms (1500 watts into 2 ohms) per channel and cost nearly a million rand a piece.

Now the question begs: What makes it so special? Why such a hefty price tag?

This could be that it is stable down to 1 ohm and lower - these amps are used to drive four 15" (8 ohm / 500 watt) TAD woofers per channel in the control rooms (8 woofers total used in the Infra-Sonic speaker system)
They feature ultra-low THD figures
Output devices are custom made for FMA
Each unit goes through rigorous testing before it is shipped.

Apart from the above features they are built like any other standard amplifier. No exotic parts, no outrageous casings or embellishments. Even the connectors are standard parts - NOT gold plated. PCBs not coated in any way. Its a standard 19" wide rack-mount size. Captive cord.
