I think we all knew this was coming, but a lot of people are going to really upset about this.
And it's not as if HDMI is this seamless, perfect technology anyway.

No surprises really, but I am way more interested in the CAT5/6 cable replacing HDMI as I can't stand this stupid copy protection crap. It's making it too difficult for people to watch their own ligitimately purchased blu-rays (Avatar anyone?) when the online downloads and pirated stuff will work so much easier. Not good for the industry as a whole.

Shees.. this adds to the life of the CD and Vinyl.. I have not gone past those formats always waiting for things to settle down, which it seems they never will. (no Sunset  )

Mind you I am not into movies so am strictly a stereo man, but maybe largely due to the constant change in the "movie" technology.. and never knowing when to hop on past entry level.

Anyone with a pre-HDMI/DVI HD screen will have to resort to a converter like the HDFury (love that name).

The latest version of this gadget takes the HDMI data stream, removes the HDCP protection,
and outputs in either component or RGBVH (HD15 VGA or 5-BNC RGB) format at 720p/1080i/1080p, up to 1080p72.
The HDFury3 has two HDMI inputs btw, earlier versions only had one.

I don't really need one of these, but I'm tempted to buy one just in case I need it one day. Could also be useful for an older, single-HDMI screen if the HDMI socket goes and it's too expensive to repair/replace. Beyond that I just love the idea of completely removing the copy protection from a Blu-ray player. Or anything for that matter.

The problem with those is that the HDCP group that controls the codes will then block the HDCP compliance code for these HDFury components and then all of a sudden after you update your firmware and the like it stops working....

You'd think that they'd spend more time trying to combat torrent-based Internet piracy, rather than trying to limit the ways Blu-ray players can output legitimate content. You'd think.

Apple has the best approach (in the States, anyway). They make it so easy (&cheap) to buy and manage content through the iTunes store that the whole piracy thing feels like a schlep in comparison.

I would jump on Cat6 in a heartbeat.  I use HDMI and some component stuff in my kit, and frankly if I could use 1080p on component I would.  Interestingly, technically it can support as high as 1080p, but in order to push HDMI, that was prevented....

I find it less than user friendly.  It’s just about functional when sticking with one brand of product but prone to k@k when you start mixing.
