Just wondering what medium most of us use to play our music and whether we generally prefer lossless or lossy audio...

I prefer Vinyl but lately high bit-rate MP3s are also used as I am traveling a lot. As I am typing this I am listening to The Corrs on my laptop via headphones. I am currently out of town.

+1.

Can't play FLAC in the car, so my digital music is mostly high bitrate MP3. At home, I prefer spinning vinyl.

Tend to play mostly CD's, sometimes I do play vinyl.  Would probably play it more if I actually owned more, but not overly keen to start investing much in it.  I buy most of my music on a whim as well, and that is SOMEWHAT more difficult with vinyl.

Rarely play MP3/FLAC etc... Although been very impressed with the FLAC stuff I downloaded from the B&W Society of Sound.

Well, I'm in all the same boat as most of us...

-In the car mostly Mp3 as high a bitrate as possible, would love to see a flac compatible frontloader cd player in the future.
-At home, at the PC its also the same, except for flac's that I have.

I do listen to cd and vinyl as well. So, I don't prefer a particular medium, just whatever is comfortable and to enjoy the music!!

mp3 in the car, FLAC everywhere else.  Transporter in my music room, SqueezeBox Boom in bedroom, Squeezebox 3's in lounge and outside...all music served via a NAS running Squeezebox Server.  Have quite a few FLAC encoded vinyl rips where the CD version of an album is the product of stupidity otherwise known as loudness wars.  Have also ripped and FLAC encoded many a DVD Audio.

Neil makes a good point.

The cheapest way to make your system sound better is to have a stiff whisky.

Works every time, I think. Pretty sure.

But seriously, CDs ripped to Apple Lossless format, playing via a Macbook connected to a Benchmark DAC1 USB works pretty well for me. As an added bonus my iPod Touch then acts as a remote control, complete with album art and everything (using the free, imaginatively named 'Remote' app to get the Touch to talk to the Macbook on an ad hoc wi-fi network - i.e. it doesn't need to be connected to a router or an Internet or anything).

Of course, it also helps to have an amp at the end of all this, that has some glass in it. Which, interestingly, is the same material that whisky usually comes in.

So in summary, glass will make everything sound better, whether there's whisky or electrons in the glass.

I am not sure if you are looking for the medium that I like to use for convenience, or the medium that gives me the best quality, or the medium I use when traveling ect.

I use quite a few of the mediums listed, depending on the application, but never, never, never lossy. I can't see the point even on portable systems with todays storage capabilities.
