Chat applet?
« on: July 16, 2010, 09:47:22 am »
P

I know it was originally decided years ago not to have a chat applet on the forum because we did not want to lessen the board postings.

However for casual off topic chats (like pointing out Abe's memory loss :D ) would you re consider a chat applet on the forum?

Other members what do you think ?

No, skinner, if you remember correctly we didn't want the chat function 'cause no-one wanted to chat to you. That's at least how I remember it :D

I'm not a good chatter, so don't bank on any support from me...

Great idea. I am a local IRC operator on the second largest South African IRC servers (atrum.org), had a chat with the other admins, and we would love to host an avforums channel on the server.

Kay, what do you think? Add a link on the main menu which will open in a new 650 x 420px window, connecting to the IRC server and joining the channel automatically? Think I might have some code for that already...

Mmm, for a few things I like the chat thing, but I like the history the forum provides. We are also not always all available at the same time.

Still it could be useful. Especially for example - for hosting a meeting for determining a suitable meeting time and place etc.

Guess I'm a non-chatter... I usually ignore them when on other forums. Not really convinced that it is a worthy feature, but hey - that's just me!  ;D

But we are chatting here all the time even talking absolutley crapola from time to time? or do you distinguish chatting from posting by not having a record of the crapola afterward? This is perhaps useful... however if we don't think before we chat, it is quite possible we will end up with more crapola... although I know it looks unlikely... No problems with having it, I just type too durn sloooow for chatting while typing...
OK! I've had it! I don't give anymore Kharma. Kharma should work in mysterious ways...

Well, I'm in favour of it...
-Its the only way I keep in contact with my "friends & colleagues" when we are able to squeeze in some time to visit. I have met many a web friend through chat before meeting them face to face, not to mention this forum. I even found "old" lost friends like frikkie and made new friends in Shonver, Byrd, Abe and other Cape Town forum members!!

Thanx Kay and AVSA!!
