Length of speaker cables?
« on: July 01, 2010, 03:23:43 pm »
Hi guys

About to leave for Ghana for a couple of weeks - but on my return I plan on getting Polk Audio FXi A6 to complete my surround sound system.

Now - my room, as per (http://www.avforums.co.za/index.php/topic,4835.0.html) is 5.7 x 4.2 and will not be ready for a couple of months, so I'm not sure what length speaker cables to get as I'm not sure where I'll be placing the components... any advice on this? I was thinking 10m for each speaker?

Also, any advice on a speaker cable?
My fronts are wired with QED Silver Anniversary XT Speaker Bi-Wire Cable (3m each), which ended up being a gift after I loaned them (http://www.futureshop.co.uk/speaker-cables-qed-speaker-cables-c-95_175.html)
Center is QED Silver Anniversary XT Speaker Cable (http://www.futureshop.co.uk/qed-silver-anniversary-xt-speaker-cable-p-515.html)

So, not sure if I should stick with the QED Silver Anniversary XT Speaker Cable - or try something else for the rears?

Thanks

Hi-Phibian

don't waste money on rear cable. you don't even hear the extreme freqs from there. Use something as chunky as aesthetically acceptable but no need for silver, litz, teflon etc. Decent 1.5mm sq ripcord will do fine. spend money on the centre cable though.

You sure about rears cabling? :) I like the idea of the easy solution because that means I don't have to worry that much about getting the length right at the moment

Out of interest - what do you think of my current cables? They were basically a gift... so no reason to complain from my side. All banana terminated.

Agreed.

I have nice rear cable, but not overly expensive. More aesthetically pleasing than anything else. and that is as it should be. Spend money on your front sound stage, that's where it belongs.

I am with HiPhib on this.
I might be a cheapskate but don't see the need for expensive cable for my rears, I bought some Tributaries cable, they do a good enough job for me.

Agree with 'Phibian and Analogos. Your rears are perfect candidates for some Ellies Flat. Good stuff. And cheap as chips.

I concur, I have ellier flat for all my cables, (front, centre and surrounds) and I am happy with it. I added my own banana plugs to them all.

I would use better in front (depending on system level).

Now I'm in a new room and my rear cables are too short :p

Any idea where to get decent 1.5mm rip-cord or Ellies flat in Cape Town? Builders Warehouse could not help... and the last time they charged me R10/m of 1mm

Considering I need new front speaker cables, centre included...

How would the following do:
Chord Carnival SilverScreen Speaker Cable
http://www.chord.co.uk/products.php?pg=56

Think I need about 7-10m x 3.

Its well reviewed and not too dear. What is local pricing like?

I am very impressed with these and have taken on distribution. Thin, flexible, sounds good and compares well to dearer cables. http://www.telluriumq.com/

Not sure locally...

Its $273 for 3x 10m terminated with banana plugs on each end, so landed it should be R3000 after customs and vat.

What does the Tellurium Q go for roughly?
