Wanted- external multi media player
« on: June 28, 2010, 11:13:34 am »
Hi guys
I hope I've posted this in the correct section. I have decided it's time to get one of these as my laptop is fast running out of hard drive space and I would like to transfer all music, pictures and video clips onto such technology.
Before I go out and source a new one, does anyone have one for sale?
I am still learning about these items and will ask some questions on another thread so if you do have one for sale, please be gentle with me if I ask a few noob questions!
Cheers
Daniel

Yoh! Sounds a bit pricey doesnt it? I've got quotes so far on the Esquire at around R1400 which includes the casing, harddrive and its a 1 tb hdd and can play all forms of media (apparently!)

Currently the best player is the WD TV player. this player does not have an internal hard drive, so you need a separate standalone unit. The reason why I prefer it to others (I have the HD MVix which is crap in comparison) because it plays just about every format kown to man (including the high def MP4). It is also very cheap (I paid $100, but i think you can get it here for about R1400.).

Good luck

Hi Daniel

Take a look at the links below. It depends really on what you are after. Note the guys complaining that they cant play their mkv's on this player.

It also looks like it doesnt support audio over hdmi as the specification for HDMI on the front page sates HDMI 1.2.

You wont find a better price for the mede8er than that shown in the ad posted by Norval. Go and look at the price at Dion Wired. Something like R2800 for the exact same thing! That should give you some idea of the value. Not sure if you are aware but the mede8er is also an SA brand!
Caution, whatever you read above, may, wonder of wonders, contain some level of jocularity.

clearly my knowledge on "media servers" is outdated, but yeah if you can get to your solution in a cheaper way, by all means.

once again, the WD TV does play MKV files and supports HDMI audio (1.3). had mine for a couple of months and loving it.

I own a WDTV and it is OK as a starter multimedia player. There are some HD files that it does not play, however. Apart from that, I am happy with it. Would I recommend it, though? Only for those on a budget. I dream of a Mede8er...
