BUDGET headphones recommendation
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:33:11 pm »
Hi guys

I'm looking for good quality headphones in SA costing around R500 (student budget :-p)

I mainly listen to trance music,so bass response is important.Comfort is another factor as I will use these whilst working on the pc. +- 8hr sessions.

Should I look at entry level Sennheisers?Plantronics? or does this price constitute Hi-Fi corp specials only lol

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Dude

Check out www.bidorbuy.co.za - search headphones

There is a cat selling brand new Skullcandy cans from as little R250. There others selling the more traditional DJ cans as well

Quite honestly more bang for your buck

Sennheiser HD202's. Personally can't stand in-ear-anything.

A couple of years ago I switched to the 202's for gaming and music on the PC. They're great but I've since moved on to the bigger circum-aural HD380 pro Senns that I use to listen to music at work and gaming. They've got the best bass response I've heard in headphones and produce really really deep frequencies.

But even the HD202's make regular headphones sound cheap.

Mmmm I wanted to listen to my 202's quickly but it seems they've gotten feet

I would second the suggestion for the Sony's. IMHO - Really nice, deep, smooth bass, that isn't slow, but certainly not 'tight'. I don't own them, but I've listened to them (to deep house btw), and atmosphere wise, they sound like you've strapped a nightclub to your head.

HD-201 / HD-202. I got a pair of 201s for use at the office. Of course you can get better if you spend more, but compared to anything else for similar money they sing.

Unless it's important to you not to bother people next to you, I would also suggest trying the HD 437s. I owned both the HD 437s and the HD 202s and prefer the sound of the 437s. They're cheaper too, so what's not to like?

Cool I'll check the 437's out.Got a quote today for the HD202's for R400.Good price? They had the HD 215 for R750.Not sure whether it's worth the extra cash though.

Thanks again

I have 201’s and am quite happy with them. A few years ago I had 437’s and wasn’t completely happy with their sound/ergonomics/quality and eventually gave them away.
437 Pros
- Lighter
- Louder

437 Cons

- Uncomfortable over long periods. They sit on the ear. They made my ears feel hot.
- The overhead sponge thingy was flaky on mine...and eventually unglued itself and I do not listen to headphones on a daily basis so I didn’t overwork/abuse them.
-  I found them average-sounding.

201 Pros
- Sit around the ear.
- They really sound good through my PC and iPod.

201 Cons
- They are part of the Sennheiser DJ line, and thus might lack snob appeal. Speaking for myself, I disregarded them first time around based solely on that. Regretted it ever since I found out how good the 201’s are. Stupid me.
- Theoretically heavier. Almost 40g heavier than 437s. In practice, I don’t feel it.
- The 3.5mm jack sits awkward on my laptop as the socket is on the front and the outside part of the jack is long and hard which means if I am not careful I can put stress on it inadvertently and damage something. This is not an issue with laptops that have earphone sockets on the side.

Get the 2s if you don’t mind. Avoid the 4s.
