I am not in any way suggesting that a bit of humour is not welcome in a review. What I find irksome is silly and frivolous remarks being passed off as humour. I feel this brings down the overall quality of the magazine especially as AVSA is trying to promote itself as S.A.'s premier audio visual magazine. To achieve this end, AVSA needs to improve the quality of its journalism.

In defence of William, whose humour and writing gives me welcome relief almost always during the editing process of the magazine, if his style of writing was that bad, then he wouldn't have a steady stream of importers/distributors more than happy to let him loose on their products. I don't agree that his writing in anyway detracts fro the value of the magazine - if anything, I think it adds to it. To have all our reviewers writing in the same style issue after issue would be more damaging, I think. William stirs controversy every now and then, and like him or not, that is what gets people's attention, and gets them involved in debate, of which we've seen a few heated ones when some people forget there's no real right or wrong in the AV world, simply what makes you most happy.

A lot of people in this country tend to have a simplistic and childlike sense of humour. Witness the success of the Leon Schuster movies. Need I say more.

Gosh Sabby, when will you realise that your opinion is just that - YOUR opinion. Fine, you don't like William writing style. Noted. A lot of us do. Deal with it.

dotVibe I don't quite know why you are getting so hot and bothered. After all, this is supposed to be and open and friendly discussion forum. I am perfectly aware that this is my opinion and not everybody needs to agree with it. But I also thought, I hope correctly, that this forum afforded everyone the opportunity to express their own opinions. It's known as freedom of speech. And I have dealt with it, I simply don't read any reviews written by William.

Let's keep it light.  We are just discussing everyone's opinion without forcing it down on anyone.

Opinions are like arseholes,
Everyone has one, they just differ in size! And that doesn't mean everyone wants to see it. ;D

I tried to give my opinion about reviews the other day, but somehow the text disappeared (probably. better that way ;)) and was just too pissed off to retype everything.
(Insert inspirational quote)

Ah, it wasn't me! Swear. Only just got back to work today and am too jet-lagged to delete comments. Maybe William did it. I'll blame him.  ;)

What are you trying to do? If he loses his job who's going to feed his puppy?

Gonzo journalism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism which is written subjectively, often including the reporter as part of the story via a first person narrative. The word Gonzo was first used in 1970 to describe an article by Hunter S. Thompson, who later popularized the style. The term has since been applied to other subjective artistic endeavors.

Gonzo journalism tends to favor style over accuracy and often uses personal experiences and emotions to provide context for the topic or event being covered. It disregards the 'polished' edited product favored by newspaper media and strives for the gritty factor. Use of quotations, sarcasm, humor, exaggeration, and profanity is common.

Hot and bothered? I suppose irritated is closer the truth.  You persist with pushing your opinion that this journalist's reviews are somehow inferior and now you infer that AVSA lacks credibility as a premier AV publication because of said journalist. Nice one.

Sure you are entitled to an opinion. We all are. The difference is in how we state those opinions, when we criticise, do we do so constructively or destructively? Are we satisfied with stating what we believe or do we campaign to convert others to our beliefs?

I have now spent more effort on this silly thread than it's worth. For some reason I just get irritated when some poor sap gets slated for no particular reason. Raise your opinion, fine. But why keep hammering at it? It's so unnecessary.

I'm with DotVIBE and Abe here, I like his William's reviews. You've had your say, rightfully so as it is your opinion and there is nothing wrong with that. No need to keep on punting it tho.... we get the idea. I don't agree with you but that doesn't mean I'll force my opinion onto you either.
