Thanks - I'm also looking for something for the bedroom... so I'll look into it.

Out of interest, what's the difference between vented and not?

Vented means you need a chimeny or flue to the outside - you lose a huge amt thru this and it limits positioning
No vent is a naked flame , with an o2 venturi , it has oxygen depeltion sensors etc - all the heat goes into the room - all you need is a gas supply to it. They are very safe apart from the naked flame thing.

Just don't hang a screen above the novent, it gets quite hot up there, unless you put a shelf above the no-vent, mom had a painting above the novent, it got a bit tacky and shall we say elastic...

I can imagine.

I'm more concerned over the speakers than the screen :p

you've settled on projector then?

interesting. in that size room I'd have gone for a 50" plasma.

Hey the shelf/mantelpiece worked  ;D is about 200mm's wide, just far enough to keep the heat away...

I'd be very distraught if the speakers got damaged :p and the center will probably be in front of the fire place.

Got flak last night when I suggested covering the fireplace - and bricking up the window.... I did ask her how many times she's opened the curtain since we moved there... which is not once... considering it looks into the courtyard.

Nope - If I brick up the fireplace - I'd probably go with a screen. I need a new one any ways, I have a 46" series 5 Samsung LCD - which performs really poorly in low-light conditions.

OK, to solve the GF and windows/courtyard issue just get a roll up light blocking blind. Really effective AND cost effective.

Personally, I'd brick up the fireplace (or fill it with sound deadening / panels to improve your sound). I'd smooth that wall nicely and do the projector route, it's really really imposing and oh so much cheaper then the large LCD/Plasma's! The idea of a gas heater type coffee table sounds really really smart! Run a small gas cable under the floor when you lay down some wooden flooring over the tiles, some light wood would be great there!

If you are starting from scratch why not try and build some sound dispersion/deadening panels onto the walls behind the speakers to improve your sound. Also, your centre chanel can be just below the bottom of your projector screen. Make sure that you get some trunking put into the walls so you don't have unsightly cables all over the place. You can also then use the back of the room for media centre/amps/etc as the only thing at the front will be the speakers. That way you can hide unsightly stuff that might distract from your movie and also provide easy access.

I agree with the folding french doors for the openings, that way they can fold up against the walls and not be seen at all when use. Also, the curtain or even blind route is a good option there too.

Instead of buying subs if you are going to build why not go the IB route? It sounds like the best bang for buck hey!

Depends on your priorities. If screen size is all you care about, sure, but if picture quality is an issue you'll find a good projector setup far more expensive.

How practical is that for the average person to implement? Sorry, I know I sound argumentative but I really would like to know.

Whats the IB route?

Picture to me is about 75% as important as sound. I'd like to see the Optoma HD20 projector in action...

This room will be used for audio and movies - not general TV  - I'll use the current lounge for that

IB = In built?
I remember seeing pics in a hifi mag of some guy that used his whole basement for horn enclosures for his bass drivers and the mouths exited in the walls - Exteme WAF

Thats exactly what I thought it meant.

Just a note - this is my five year house (1st house) - so whatever I do, I'd like to take as much with me.
