Collected the Apacer AL460 room Piazza Computers in Randburg. It plays all the files I wanted the device to handle and I'm quite happy with the product. Haven't had much time to play with all the functions and connect it to my PC yet but will get around to it hopefully over the weekend.
Only thing I don't like is that the remote is small and I would have preferred the Start / Pause button to be the same button and not two seperate ones.
Please send me the link to download the App from - currently running Vista and planning to format and install Windows 7 soon.
Here is the email I received from Joel:
You query as forwarded to me Yesterday.
I've been following your question on the forum for a while (at least I was until my Internet stopped working) and I think many of your questions have were answered there. And to be honest probably better than I could too.
Most BD players do have USB ports and as you know many DVD players too, and these in my opinion are there more for looking at the odd picture than for serious media playback.
As mentioned on the forum typical flash transfer rates are a little slow for HD, but this is changing and flash read speeds are getting quicker.
Write rates are good.
Once again my opinion is that player manufacturers don't want to enable too much functionality into the USB side of their players as this virtually eliminates the need for a player in the first place. Get people too used to using flash or external hard drives and they will soon realise that they probably don't need a player at all.
Off course media player manufacturers do actually see flash and streaming becoming dominant and this is why they are becoming so popular.
I haven't done any reviews on media devices so cant offer any real insight as to which models work best.
If you like I can ask some distributors what formats the USB ports on their players support, but I suspect that they will just refer to a spec sheet and dig no deeper.
