Just my 2c - I am thoroughly enjoying this media player http://emea.apacer.com/en/products/AL460_Full_HD_Media_Player.htm
The sound is great, it plays everything incl .flac, divx, .mkv, also ripped dvd folders with menu navigation and everything, it networks easily with Windows XP.
It is also takes any format external HDD without size limit. 1080p support etc.

It should be less than R800, which is, imvho, a great deal.

There are a number of utilities that you can use to format large HDD's to FAT32. Read the warnings though!

Swissknife will also do it: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/SwissKnife.shtml

My Samsung BR player can read NTFS formatted partitions and open up 12GB MKV's, if that helps. In fact, I've connected my 500GB USB HDD to it and it reads it perfectly.

Thanks for the info on the Samsung. Which model do you have?

Thanks for everyone's input and to quickly reply to some other responses:
1. On piracy - Piracy is not my intention but I would rather convert my DVD's to AVI's or MPG's and play them from a hard disk or a flash disk because I can scroll all the files and choose whatever I want to watch without having to change the DVD everytime. Will also eliminate scratching the DVD's when the kids watch. My video's from my video camera are in HD as well and why go to the additional expense of writing them to DVD when I can have "hundreds" on my flash disk or hard drive? A friend gave me 4x video's he shot on his camera which in total 5GB and are too large to fit on a single DVD5 but fit onto my 32GB Flash Disk (formatted NTFS of course). As someone mentioned as well is that legitimate paid downloads are are not in DVD format either.
2. Referring to reviews on Blu-ray players - No I am not but will have to look at some - just found info lacking i.e. USB port listed but not the readable formats etc.
3. AVSA referred my query to a freelance journalist and I have asked him to find out more for me as I am sure his contacts are better than mine. If he gives his permission I will copy & paste his response here as well.

Thanks for the info. Looks quite good and I am waiting a reply from them on who their distributors are in SA. Found this though: http://www.easybuyelectronics.co.za/apacer-al460-full-hd-media-player-p-12047.html

I ordered the Apacer from Piazza Computers in Randburg for R911.00 as it is more convenient for me to collect from them. Will let you all know in a week or so what I think of it. ;D

I suppose this is Pinnacle Micro ;D But at first I read "to be disturbed" by P M as that has been my previous experience(on a corporate level) ;D

Yup, I got it from Pinnacle. I'm very interested in what you think.
If you have any trouble networking with a Windows XP pc, let me know, there is a little app that you can download (20mb) that makes it super easy, but it is tricky to find, so I'll send you the link.

Collected the Apacer AL460 room Piazza Computers in Randburg. It plays all the files I wanted the device to handle and I'm quite happy with the product. Haven't had much time to play with all the functions and connect it to my PC yet but will get around to it hopefully over the weekend.

Only thing I don't like is that the remote is small and I would have preferred the Start / Pause button to be the same button and not two seperate ones.

Please send me the link to download the App from - currently running Vista and planning to format and install Windows 7 soon.

Here is the email I received from Joel:

You query as forwarded to me Yesterday.

I've been following your question on the forum for a while (at least I was until my Internet stopped working) and I think many of your questions have were answered there. And to be honest probably better than I could too.

Most BD players do have USB ports and as you know many DVD players too, and these in my opinion are there more for looking at the odd picture than for serious media playback.
As mentioned on the forum typical flash transfer rates are a little slow for HD, but this is changing and flash read speeds are getting quicker.
Write rates are good.
Once again my opinion is that player manufacturers don't want to enable too much functionality into the USB side of their players as this virtually eliminates the need for a player in the first place. Get people too used to using flash or external  hard drives and they will soon realise that  they probably don't need a player at all.

Off course media player manufacturers do actually see flash and streaming becoming dominant and this is why they are becoming so popular.
I haven't done any reviews on media devices so cant offer any real insight as to which models work best.

If you like I can ask some distributors what formats the USB ports on their players support, but I suspect that they will just refer to a spec sheet and dig no deeper.

Regards Joel

Yeah, that remote is tiny!

Another little niggle is that the usb cables running to the HDD's sometimes get in the way of the IR beam of the remote, so careful positioning is needed, either of the cables, or the remote operator.

Never got a chance to connect it to my PC as my brother inlaw came to visit, begged me for it, packed it into it's box, gave me some money and thanks, get yourself another one.

I would still like some feedback from someone on Blue Ray DVD players that can read NTFS formatted disks.
