Sub project 2 -plate amp and low distortion driver
« on: April 25, 2010, 03:25:35 am »
On offer is a used plate amp I bought from ApexJr. It is the Cerwin-Vega! full-range amp here  (also follow the links). It is equipped with a 220V transformer, and is rated at 150W. I have upgraded the power supply by increasing the value of the reservoire caps and installing a metal 35A bridge rectifier (see the project links for further ideas for upgrading to higher power). I have modified the high-pass filter to give a peaked response that is equivalent to a Linkwitz transform plus high-pass filter, suited to the sealed enclosure that I am giving for free.

Also supplied is an Adire Audio low distortion 10" subwoofer driver that uses the XBL^2 motor technology. It was an OEM driver codenamed FX-10, not available to the public.

T/S parameters:
Re = 3.3 ohm
Qr = 0.4863
Qt = 0.4254
L = 0.9mH
BL = 9.084 Wm/m
P = 300W
n = 84.2dB
Qm = 3.4
Vas = 79.69 litre
Sd = 345cm^2
Xmax = 18mm
Dynamic mass = 70.89g
Fs = 27.3Hz

The sealed enclosure comes for free. It is made of 22mm MDF and has rosewood (IIRC) veneer. It has Dacron type stuffing. The subwoofer can be used as is, but note the following:

  • The grille cloth needs to be replaced.
  • I recall there being air leaks, probably where the grill holders are fitted; these will have to be sealed (noise is only audible when doing LF sweeps, though).
  • There are some dings and surface scratches on top of the enclosure, due to being in storage.
  • The system can be redesigned as a bass reflex (ported or passive radiator) system, which will be more efficient, but will require a larger enclosure, and the equalisation implemented will have to be defeated (by restoring a few resistors to original values).

The whole system is in fact a prototype subwoofer I developed a while back.

Asking R1500. Cape Town.

Driver has some dust from being in storage. The visible ding on the dust cap I was able to push out via the motor vent.
