Hi guys (and girls)
Went to the AVA Expo here in Sandton convention centre. Compared to last year I've been pleasantly surprised at the increase in exhibitors, especially in the specialist/non-mainstream audio. Over and above the usual large Sony, LG, Canon, Nikon stalls, there was a huge musical instrument section. On the audio side, there were beautiful sets of Magnaplanars playing, the larger set on glorious Plinius kit. Nice new Audiolab as well. They picked up a little issue later in the afternoon, but sure that's been fixed with a new fuse. Onkyo and Polk abound, as were Yamaha. AVCables had a static display of Spendor and Furutech, with an Emmlabs CDP on special. Two home automation stalls, fully functional with friendly (suppose it was day one) salespeople. Denon had a static display, as did the B&W/Marantz/Classe importers - who although being static, did have a nice display of Mark L, Kimber, Classe and the big 800s and 802s amongst others, together with a HUUUUUUUUUGE Panasonic. Pretty much the whole Marantz line-up featured as well. Tucked away was a (the name slipped me now) stall displaying the beautiful Red wine audio, Amphion and Allmare kit. Pity that with all the external noise you could not have a real listen. There were a few others, new technologies speakers I think they called it, as were Quad/Audiosure with a small rather disappointing stand. Playing Quad CDP through 909 to 22L2s.
As for show specials, suppose if you chatted more you could find out, although the Magnaplanar/Plinius stand had a huge pricelist against the wall - and was the stand I kept on going back to.
Oh, and Earthquake was there. WTF.
