Scans
« on: April 13, 2010, 05:14:12 pm »
I just got another set of Hivi D8.8+ from Stuart (Xumbug) today. Guess what he told me?

He is bringing in ScanSpeak drivers now! You can get them from him muuuuuch cheaper than to import from the States.

That is good news! I've always wanted to do a set of ZRT's but dropping R10k on drivers alone did not make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Stu, please tell me you not gonna try and rape us here ???

Nah, he won't. Only thing is his first price break is at 10 units. So we'll have to pull together for a group buy or add to what he is bringing in himself perhaps.

Hey gbyleveldt,

I would never do such a thing ;D
To give you some idea: If i order 10 x 18w/8531G00 from Scan, i get them for $145 US before shipping, Madi sells for $225.00
If i order 20 x 18w/8531 then the price drops to $95.92 US before shipping. I have just finished a project of 8 speakers for a client using 2 x 18w and 6600 tweeter for R9500.00 cost including Jantzen caps and Cherry cab. my Retail R19000.00 imported equivalent to R28 - 30k. Get enough chaps together and i will do this with pleasure ;) love to see the DIY boom like it did in the 70's and 80's.

Any indications as to which drivers may make the list? Any subwoofers, perhaps? ::)

I can get any of the Scan drivers that you want, just remember that pricing is quantity discount related. The more of any one driver the better the discount from Scan. The first price break is at 10 the second at 20.

Stu,

For small quantities like 2 off or 4 off, how would your price compare to Madisound?

Are you interested in handling small quantities like 2 and 4?

Maybe people should post numbers so that we can have an idea of where interest is sparked so that we can tag along and work on that discount ;)

The only thing with a group buy is getting everyone to agree on a driver(s)... Member(a) might have a 150l behemoth in mind whereas member(x) is thinking of a nice 6l for the study...

Seems like 10 is the magical number to get to in terms of a good discount... So that would be five people willing to cough-up....

From my side I have a limited budget so I am looking at the more affordable in the range... I am also quite green on the speaker building front so I cannot really offer any good (as in educated) suggestions regarding driver selection...

I've been looking at the more affordable drivers as well.  The drivers overall are pretty good to start off with.

How would we go about this? A poll or other voting mechanism?

I am quite willing to let the more experienced speaker builders choose... Like I said though.. My bottom line is what i can really afford...

The ideal though would be a versatile driver that could be used in many different confugurations from BR to transmission line... Not sure if such a driver exists... bang for buck wise it seems that 6.5" or 5.25" gives the best performance for price ratio... Like i say - I am new at this - so I could be wrong  :-\
