AKG, why so painfull?
« on: April 13, 2010, 04:13:14 pm »
Man, there must be something wrong with me, but every time I want to get something that is just a little unique (apparently) I end up getting the run around. And this with someone whom is not famous for his patience. Geeeeez.

Anyway, I'm in the market to get myself a nice set of headphones and I've always preferred the AKG character. I've got an old set of K66's and, while pretty basic, was always my weapon of choice even after getting a set of Senns that were 3 times the price. But the K66's does have some flaws, mainly being limited bottom end response and limited resolution. Because I've got no idea what model in the AKG range I'd like, I obviously need to demo a set - and here's the rub... There seems to be nowhere where I can demo any units. I've phone Conniosseur three times already, all the while being sent on a wild goose chase by their retailers. Either I get blank stares when mentioning AKG, or I get the "We'll have to order them for you" Grrrrr!! If I new what I wanted I wouldn't mind, but I don't!!

So, apparently all the decision makers at Conniosseur are in Hong Kong, so they no help either, plus their employees can't help because they can't open boxes or give pricing. *SIGH*

So I've listened to some Senn HD555's and I do like these and they are in the budget I'm prepared to spend. But I know I'll always be wondering if I made the right call by not at least trying to get hold of the AKG's for a demo at least. I'm just wondering if I've tried enough or if I should just be a little more patient.

What say you?

With that kind of service I would runaway

You can feel peace in that you have not supported another one of these fat cat companies that sit around doing nothing to sell their goods, but when they unexpectedly do - they expect fat wads of commission for the pleasure. Whenever listening to your new AKG's you could well alsways be feeling the frustration of having to get them.

At least give them the finger and import the things yourself if you do go the AKG route. Maybe there are some other forumites here who have a pair or somthing similar?

I'm more of an AKG fan too. So it's a crying shame that if you want to audition good headphones you'll have to buy Sennheisers. The nicer AKGs are not even listed in the AVSA Buyers guide. It seems AKG got tired of the consummate pros W&M, who made zero effort, so tried Connoisseur Marketing, a consumer junk company that will disappoint equally.

If you could coax Connoisseur Marketing to get you a set to audition, the price would probably be 3-4 x what you'd pay for an online order. That certainly was the case at W&M. Their last price for the K701 was just under R8k. So at a 50% discount (which most dealers won't get) you'd still be losing. There was a pair of 701s in a display case there some time back. Dunno if someone has just taken them home yet.

The Sennheiser website has an impressive listing of distributors. Pity the Sennheiser cans usually sound terrible.

To answer your question: Why so painful? Because they can. Just like W&M could for many years, and 8th Avenue before them.

Hmmm, all good ideas. If I knew what it was I wanted, I wouldn't have blinked importing them myself.

Headphones and auditioning are very rarely mentioned in the same sentence in a hifi store. It is very unfortunate, but I can understand why dealers may be unwilling to open boxes. Even overseas most HP purchases are made on reviews.

...which leaves buying blind as the most common route pursued unfortunately.

Well, doing a little hunting around, I find that the AKG comes with a hefty premium over the Senns. For example, a set of HD595's cost around $250 and the K240 MkII's go for around $199. Here, I can pick up a set of HD595's for around R2500, but the K240's will set me back R3000, R1000 too much for the AKG.

So, I think the decision is made then. I like the HD555's, I would've liked to try something else but seeing as it's so hard to actually demo a set of AKG's I don't really think I'm loosing out on too much, especially when you compare the price.

In the past, when I worked in various retail outlets we always used to have a branded display rack with Sennheiser cans dangling from it and they were available for audition. However, there were about 10 or so models then so 6 or 7 would be representative. Today there are so many...

Curiously, on occasion you'll see K701/K702 at about the same price as K240  ??? Just over R3k at http://www.wantitall.co.za/akg-headphones/Electronics/p1 where the K240 is R3k5. Take2 has about the same at http://more.take2.co.za/usa?deptname=Electronics&qsearch=AKG+K601. The two models are really not in the same league. Are these prices to be relied upon or are they just teasing us?

WOW!!! Look at that pricing for the 701's!! Those go for over R6k here! Maybe I should just hold off getting those Senns then, seeing as Amazon is doing a half price sale on a lot of these units.

Grrrrr!!!! Confused!!!

Greetings Mr Field of axes,
I take it that the need for headphones is as a result of the need for silent listening as to not disturb the new addition Baby Field of Axes ?

I agree that there will be a difference between K240 MKII and AKG 501/601/702/702.

I think you might prefer the K240 MKII being used to the K 66.

Check EBAY : http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-AKG-K702-Reference-Headphones-K-702-headphone_W0QQitemZ370363871831QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDJ_Gear_Lighting?hash=item563b683257
and Headroom : # $ 289 + approx ($ 50 shipping) for AKG K 701 : http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-AKG-K702-Reference-Headphones-K-702-headphone_W0QQitemZ370363871831QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDJ_Gear_Lighting?hash=item563b683257

The 702 at headroom is $ 349 but i.m.o a better buy having the removable/replaceable cable.
