Off the shelf - would like to try before buy
« on: February 26, 2010, 10:02:17 am »
Need some advice on where I can try the following headphones out. I live in Johannesburg.

Grado SR60i
Creative Aurvana Live!
Sennheiser PX100

Two of my sources are very portable - an iRiver L-Plyer and an Acer One Aspire Netbook - so it's easy for me to just show up for a "soundcheck".

thanx in advance

I bought a pair of PX100s for the wife at Audiophile in Atterbury Value Mart, Pretoria. so they may help you there... they are quite nice and laid back and natural sounding, can listen for hours... folding up is great! We are running around a bit prepping for the baby so would normally offer a listen, but things are a bit hectic...
I heard the iGrado's briefly and ito quality, they were perhaps a better match for the px100, than the SR 60's seem to be? not as foldable though and quite lively and detailed - compared to PX100, which may be your cuppa tea, or not, and didn't really sound like they needed anymore power than the iphone supplied, may well do better but was quite an eyeopener for ca. R500? Don't know where you can listen to it...
Also look at Koss Porta Pro, old school headphones that look quite 70's, coz they are and also about R500 on the web. iGrado's look very nice...

iGrado probably the reason I'd get a portable music source... even high bit mp3 sounded cool.

P.S. Am not a headphone listener usually so could not possibly say how good these are in relation to other headphones out there.
OK! I've had it! I don't give anymore Kharma. Kharma should work in mysterious ways...

Skull Candy-Skullcrushers are also pretty decent sounding, I have compared them with my Grado GS 1000 i's and bought them straight out for I-phone and pc. apps.

I bought the Abel Money's.

my fave portables are a pair of m@h40 sennies. prolly now obsolete but still on line here and there. basically a low impedance re incarnation of the HD40. fold up flat. the new cushions are harder (and perhaps harder wearing) but you can buy the soft replacements as spares cheaply. very light, very comfy. they were mod in the 80s... I keep going back to these, comfy, light, lekker.

Hi

It's early in the AM and I have my phones on so I guess that must tell you I am enjoying my purchase!

I went for the Sennheiser HD 238.

I got a chance to listen to the Grads and the Senn PX100 but went with these as I felt they fitted nicely between the others sound, comfort and price-wise.

I may have gone for the Grads but... my iRiver L-player accidentally went for a swim right off the basin while I tried to capture a slippery bar of soap and.. @#$%^!~!!

So I found myself having to dig into my budget to get another portable source at the same time. Best bang for my buck - a 2GB Sansa Clip. Strong sound for what it is and thanks to the latest firmware it now supports FLAC, which is a format I'm keen to pursue.

So back to the Senns. Overall, the HD 238s are a cut above the PX 100s - more aggressive and not as laid back. The bass is actually quite smooth; I think it goes down lower than the PX100. As I am still in the pre burn-in phase I must admit that I am finding them a little bit "boomy", but will see where this goes by the end of the week.

They're as portable and comfortable as the PX100s. It's still got that Sennheiser sound, smooth and no background hiss. I think they should perhaps be a tad cheaper (R999), but I do believe that Sennheiser did make a good medium-level set of portable headphones with the HD 238.

Cant wait to try them out on my '70s B&O once I break it out of storage. All that vinyl...

Cleetus

Those do look cool, as for the Skull Candy's, the Ti's are more detailed but the Skullcrushers have the amp with built in subs.
The Hesh is also very nice as well as the Gi's.

Not a huge can-fan but with all the talk kinda keen to give a bash - just have a pre-amp thing thing to run them though

Not sure if it warrants going balls to the wall and getting a can-amp though. I did have a sweet mixing desk once that was the business  for the cans

Think i will either check out the aerials or the Skulls at some stage -not sure the price on the skulls but the aerials range from 550 +
