Certainly a grey area, but I would suspect that the person that loads copyright  music on to Youtube and the like is breaking some kind of law.
most CD.s DVDs etc have a stipulation that the material is not for public broadcast, and by putting music on an open forum you are making this available to to the public.

It could I assume also be argued that as you choose to listen to music or watch videos, that you should first check if there is any copyright infringement. How you could check I certainly don't know.

One again my suspicion is that it is similar to listening to music from a jukebox in a public place.
You choose the song, and the owner/operator pays royalties. (or they should if they want to keep legally operating)
You certainly cant expect everyone in in the venue to pay a few cents every time they hear a song or watch a video.

perhaps Andrew can speak to his contacts at the record companies and get their point of view.

Sorry, I did, yes. Yes, it is legal according to a few that I spoke to, as many music companies use YouTube as a way to publicise new artists, albums and the such. If a video is posted prior to offcial release, then the relevant music company will ask YouTube to remove the video, which they are obliged to do. But so long as you have the bandwidth to waste, then listen away, by all means. The advantage of YouTube is that is doesn't (so far as I know) have the software like on MtV that will block viewers from certain countries from seeing a music video because it hasn't been officially released there yet.

No worries, YouTube, as a reputable company is bound by laws, which is why quite often you will find certain videos that have been removed due to copyright infringements. All you are doing is watching what has been placed on their site - if there is a slip-up, it's not your fault, so watch away and enjoy.

sorry to drag this back up again but i would also assume that since youtube is highly compressed it will never ever replace purchasing the original content - for example i have watched videos on youtube and based on what i saw there was able to decide whether i really did want a particular disc or not - and i have made purchases based on this therefore i think it is certainly in those companies interests to allow you to watch those youtube video's

we dont have the internet speed to watch these video's in real time nor the bandwidth to allow us to watch it many times repetitively so its better to watch it once and then decide whether to buy it .... this would generally still be a cheaper way to enjoy that content and also to enjoy it in the high quality that the producers intended

Agreed, the quality is in general awful.
