AVSA Dec 09/ Jan 2010
« on: December 03, 2009, 01:42:03 pm »
I read Deon's review of the Jamo 907 speakers with interest and they do sound like something out of the ordinary.

Just one question, are the woofers 380cm(15 inches) or are they 12 inches? ;D

...and will the real 907's please stand up? There are pictures of two different speakers shown in that article. Compare the tweeters and check the number of screws on the woofers.

The R907's have 305 mm (12in) woofers. The R909 have 380mm (15in).

You are right Shaun. I think the red ones are actually R909's and the black ones are R 907's.

You must really study the mag to have picked that up.

Compared to mugshots posted of criminals at police stations where you could think why did they not keep them after taking their picture, here I would say why was photos not taken while the speakers were at the AVSA listening room?

Don't worry Deon, we are just taking the mickey out of you. ;D

Great to see that our reviews get scrutinised so closely - and apologies for the slip-up on the woofer size ... The Jamo's really are special, but were perhaps a little constrained in the AVSA listening room: would love to hear them in a bigger space with more air. :)

It seems like William has fallen into the Sony Marketting trap if judged by him stating that the Sony DBV-E300 has a power output of 1,000 watts.

According to what I could find this "1,000 watts" is made up of 143w x 5 plus 285w which sounds very convenient LOL!

I find it amazing that on the one end of the AV scale the marketting departments are devising all kinds of methods to get to 100 watts per channel, whereas on the other end of the scale they aim for 1,000 watts total!

Be that as it may, I would expect a reviewer not to fall into the same trap and rather specify the claimed output per channel(which also seems like a very long shot) than the so-called total output.

What would be nice is if AVSA could independently measure the receiver in question (measure output /clipping, harmonic distortion, power loads into lower impedances etc). Then again that wouldn't work out.  :) Never mind.

A while ago we were approached by (if I remember correctly) someone from UCT.
They offered to perform testing on amp for us using their latest Ap equipment.
The only proviso was that we would have to send amp down in batches as it would not be financially feasible to set up the whole test rig to test one amp.
Unfortunately as most distributors want their products back fairly quickly and wouldn't be too happy with us keeping amplifiers even longer while we got a batch together for shipping to the University.

Similar thing for speakers.
I have LMS sitting on a PC and have three mics, so measuring speaker response wouldnt be too difficult. Once again, it comes down to time, as it would be impractical to test one speaker at a a time .

The magazine also need consistency and either all products must be tested or none at all.

Could you imagine what would happen if we tested distributor A's amp and found it couldnt meet its output figures, but didnt test their closest competitor, who more than likely would fail a test too?

I still have access to a distortion analyser, some fancy scopes, and could put together a speaker load, so some testing is still possible.
